Whether you knew him as Clifford, Or Cliff, Or Dad, Or G’pa, Or Doc, you know that when he set his mind to do something, he gave it his all. Like his love and devotion for Mum over their 55 years of marriage. The wild and wacky furniture he built for the house when we were growing up. Arranging his shirts, ties, pants and jackets in his closet so he knew exactly which order to wear them in. His pursuit of knowledge that he would happily share with you (whether you wanted to know it or not). Learning to speak both German and Spanish and writing his “chapters” for his PhD thesis in Spanish. Reading the names at graduation with the precise pronunciation including the proud moment when he got to say the name of his own grandchild, Shan. The interesting anecdotes that he shared with his classes over the 38 years he spent at STMC wh1ile also teaching them English or Literature. Being able to discuss Nietzsche with Derek and horticulture with Martin. And thousands of other memories that will live on from his family, (in England and in Canada), his friends, and the entire STMC community. Even as that amazing brain of his slowly deteriorated due to Alzheimer’s, he still gave it his all. Regardless of which name we knew you by know that you will be dearly missed. Our hearts and yours will be connected like “stiff twin compasses”.
As for me, Dad, I am going to picture you charging up the stairway to heaven whistling and singing to “Won’t get fooled again” and when you greet St. Peter at the Pearly Gates you will say “Guess who I saw today?”
