Obituary For Blaise Joseph Zenon McKenna
It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved father, Blaise Joseph Zenon McKenna, on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, in Grande Prairie, AB, at the age of 71 years.
Blaise was born in Sydney Mines, NS on January 27, 1953, and was the youngest son of Frank and Mary McKenna. He grew up in Cape Breton, NS, surrounded by his loving family. He had many exciting adventures there before heading west to Alberta as a young man to explore emerging employment opportunities. He would spend the majority of his adult life residing in the prairie province raising a family and as well as furthering his education and career.
He was a successful scholar with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Francis Xavier University, a Bachelor of Education degree from The University of Alberta, as well as many other certifications from various educational institutions. He spent the majority of his career working with Alberta Health Services in various Director and management roles encompassing many hospitals and regions throughout Alberta. He always enjoyed learning new things and sharing his knowledge with the people he loved and cared for. He was considered a mentor by many.
Blaise cherished spending time with family and friends. He was always available to lend a helping hand or ear. He loved playing with his adoring grandchildren, who will be forever grateful for the time they spent together. Travelling with family and friends to his hometown back east and enjoying long stays in various tropical destinations were some highlights of his retirement.
He loved driving and working on his ’69 Mustang and taking long walks in the rain. In his free time, he explored many topics and always shared anything he found interesting. He very much enjoyed keeping in touch with family, friends, and colleagues. His sharp sense of humour and legendary email jokes were unforgettable.
Blaise was a compassionate and deeply caring soul. He would want us all to live our
lives with optimism and open arms, to share love and laughter wherever life takes us, and to treasure the memories we create.
Blaise is survived by his children: Ryan (Nicole), Devon, and Melissa (Brad); grandchildren Kolson, Piper, and Kacey; sister Geraldine (George); brother Michael (Sally); numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; as well as his granddogs Abby and Ella.
Blaise is predeceased by his wife Donna, father Frank, mother Mary, brothers Louis and Frank, and sisters Ann Marie and Helen.
In honour of Blaise’s memory, a small gathering of family and close friends will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, to celebrate his remarkable life. This occasion will allow those who knew him best to come together, share memories, and honour the love and joy he brought into our lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation (albertacancer.ca/donate/).
