Sister Rosetta Reiniger, OSU
August 25, 1936 — October 13, 2024
Sister Rosetta Reiniger, OSU, (Prelate) was called into eternal life on October 13 at St. Angela Merici Residence at the age of 88.
Daughter of John and Mary (Shlegel) Reiniger, she was born in Macklin on August 25, 1936, the youngest of ten children. She grew up on the family farm near Denzil, and attended the Gottlob country school for her elementary grades. Upon completing her high school at Denzil, where she met the Ursuline Sisters, she attended Teachers College in Saskatoon and taught for one year each at Gottlob and Denzil schools. At the age of 22 she made a single ladies’ retreat at the newly opened Queen’s House in Saskatoon, and upon hearing a distant train whistle, felt called to respond “yes” to a lengthy inner struggle about becoming, in her words, a “Spouse of Christ.” Then, like the train, she felt her life now had a destination.
On a stormy day in 1959, she chartered a light air-craft to take her to Prelate where she began her religious formation as an Ursuline. She entered the novitiate on August 15, 1959, taking the name “Sister Regina”, made her First Profession in 1961 and her Perpetual Profession in 1964.
She continued her teaching vocation at Prelate Public School, Viscount, Cosine, Richmound, Tramping Lake, and St. Angela’s Academy, Prelate, interrupted with two years of study – one at the Coady International Institute at Antigonish, NS and the other to complete her B. Sc. Degree at the U of S.
In 1983 she began 20 years of service as a General Council member, and in 1991 began 13 years of service as General Treasurer. She became principal of St. Angela’s Academy in 1985 and then served as Executive Director from 1994 until the Academy closed in 2007.
Her years of service in education were recognized with awards such as the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal and the Julian Paslawski Award from the SK Catholic School Boards Association.
She cherished her travels to Eastern Europe, Russia and Rome.
Always interested in technology, she became proficient in computer skills, established a first-class computer lab at the Academy and as a hobby operated a ham radio that kept her in contact with other operators around the world.
After she moved to St. Angela Merici Residence in Saskatoon in 2010, her heart remained with former Academy students as she carried their names in her phone, kept in touch with them via Facebook and organized several Academy reunions. Remaining close to her family of origin, she kept in contact with her more than 180 extended family members.
She is fondly remembered by her Ursuline Sisters for her warm personality, administrative skills, generosity in service, dedication to Ursuline traditions, love of the Academy, fondness for jokes and loyalty to the Roughriders.
Her memory is deeply cherished by her Ursuline community, her sister, Theresa, brother, Ed, sister-in-law Eva, her many nieces, nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her parents, siblings and in-laws: Philip (Agnes), Joe (Rose), Margaret (Richard Eppich), Tony (Dorothy), Peter, Bennie (Julia), Marie (Peter Kratchmer), and brother-in-law, Peter Volk.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anne’s Church, 217 Lenore Drive, Saskatoon, on Friday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m. and interment will take place at 3:00 p.m. at the Prelate Cemetery.
