Obituary
It is with broken hearts the family of Jean Carol Lockhart announce her passing which occurred on March 2, 2023, at Bobby’s Hospice. Born on October 10, 1933 in Yarmouth, NS, she was the daughter of the late Guy and Sarah (Doucette) O’Connell.
She is survived by her children, Paula Gillis of Saint John, Sandra McSweeney of Hampton, Virginia, Susan Balemans (Nick) of Quispamsis, John Lockhart (Pam) of Minto, Douglas (Pam) of Quispamsis,15 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, daughter in law Barbara Lockhart, and several nieces and nephews.
Jean was happily married for 65 years to the love of her life, her late husband Howard. Together they began raising their seven children in Saint John then moved to Quispamsis in 1971. For over 50 years Jean resided in the same home that Howard proudly built for their family and it was a place where everyone was always welcomed. Family was everything to Jean and she loved being able to care for, nurture, love and spoil her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her kind and loving nature.
Although Jean moved from Yarmouth to Saint John when she was 18, she remained very close to her only sister, Pauline with whom she shared a special bond. She wasn’t able to travel back to Yarmouth as much in her later years but enjoyed keeping in touch with her many nieces and nephews and their families.
Jean was a devout Christian and a longtime parishioner at St. Mark’s Catholic Parish in Quispamsis. She was a member of The Morning Glory’s bowling team for almost 40 years, and an active member of TOPS, where she held different positions on the executive committee. She enjoyed crafting, knitting, ceramics and she could always be seen proudly cheering at her grandson’s hockey games. Jean had an adventurous spirit and would gleefully recall riding all the rollercoasters at Coney Island when she spent vacations there as a teenager. She cherished her memories of her summer vacations camping in PEI with her family.
Jean had many friends with whom she shared laughs and fantastic memories. She was blessed with wonderful neighbours who looked out for her when she became a widow but there came a time that she made the move to live at Concorde Hall at Parkland in the Valley. Jean being the sociable person that she was, quickly made friends with both the staff and other residents. She was always an eager participant in recreational activities, day trips, parties and of course bingo. Her family will be forever grateful for how she was genuinely loved and supported at her new residence.
Besides her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Howard; sons Peter and James; granddaughter, Stephanie McSweeney; sister, Pauline Blades; brother, Clifford O’Connell; sons-in-law Michael McSweeney and Warren Gillis.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road (646-2424) with visitation being held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, between the hours of 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 171 Pettingill Road, Quispamsis on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in the spring.
Remembrances in memory of Jean may be made towards Bobby’s Hospice or to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
