We are deeply saddened to report the death of our beloved mother, Florence Letitia Plint. Florence is survived by her daughters, Hilary Plint, Alison Sawatzky, Heather Plint and Amy Plint, and their respective husbands, Gordon Keon, David Sawatzky, Dale Issler, and Dave Tomsic, as well as her three granddaughters, Margaret Sawatzky, Molly Tomsic and Edelawit Tomsic. Florence was predeceased by her son Jeremy Plint in 1983. She was also predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Colin Plint, in 2004, and by her good friend and companion, Frank Ross, in 2023. Florence was predeceased by all her siblings.
Florence was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the fourth of six children and the first of two girls. Florence met her husband, Colin, in Winnipeg while he was training for WWII with the RAF. She moved to England in 1947 to marry Colin, where they lived for three years. They returned to Canada in 1950 while Colin undertook his PhD, and in 1953 they moved to Norman, Oklahoma where they lived for the next 15 years. The family returned to Canada in 1968 and Florence and Colin raised their family in Ontario’s Niagara Peninsula. Summers were enjoyed at their cottage on Kennisis Lake in the Haliburton Highlands.
While small in stature, Florence more than made up for her size with her indomitable spirit. A spunky redhead, Florence was always up for discovering new places and traveled extensively in her senior years, including trips to Ireland, England, Germany, Slovenia, Portugal and China, as well as Caribbean cruises and stays in Georgia and California for parts of the winter. She was always on the move visiting her children and relatives.
Florence told her daughters they could be whatever they wanted to be and was adamant about the importance of education. She modeled that for her children by successfully completing History and Classics courses at Brock University in the late 1970s as a mature student. One of her favourite sayings was, “You lose nothing by trying.”
Florence loved being a grandmother and had the good fortune of being located near her granddaughters as they grew up.
She was a voracious reader and passed her love of a good book along to her children. She was adept at reading at the same time as preparing a meal. She would often read late into the night to finish a particularly engrossing book.
Florence was quick to embrace new things, including getting her first iPad and eReader in her 80s. She learned to use a computer and send and receive emails. FaceTime was soon added to her technological skill set and was a favourite way to stay in touch with family and friends.
Tenacious to the end, Florence met each health challenge in her last few years with grace and determination. She was always a force to be reckoned with, and “give up” wasn’t in her vocabulary.
Florence’s family loved her dearly and she will be sorely missed.
Special thanks are extended to her family doctor, Dr. Daisy Moores, and to Dr. Spilg and Dr. Van Walraven of the Ottawa Hospital, to the Ottawa Hospital staff, and to Dr Gupta of Bytown Palliative Medicine. Thanks also go to her palliative care nurses Rosavilla and Hwaja “Aroma” and the rest of the Bayshore Home Health team. Many thanks go to the staff at Amica Retirement Residence. Finally, the family is very grateful to Dr. Justine Amaro for her personal help and perspectives in our mother’s aging journey.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that contributions be made to the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Foundation, as per Florence’s wishes. A service of remembrance will be held at 2 pm on November 4th, 2024, at St Matthew’s Anglican Church, 130 Glebe Avenue in Ottawa with a reception to follow.
