Olga Huminicki Obituary
OLGA PHYLLIS HUMINICKI
(nee LEGIN)
Peacefully, on the morning of September 17, 2024, Olga passed away at the age of 95 at the Betel Care Home in Gimli. Touchingly, she joined her late husband, Nicholas, on what would have been his 101st birthday.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children; David (Debbie Ammeter), Donna (Myron) Paryniuk and Bill (MaryAnn Kibsey), five grandchildren; Amanda (Roland Gillies) and Sarah Huminicki, Nicholas and Alexis Paryniuk, and Elias Huminicki, as well as, numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Olga was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Nicholas, her father Vladimir (Walter) Legin, her mother Maria Legin (nee Zelinska), her sister Antonia (Peter) Dobrowolski, her brother Michael (Annie) Legin and her brothers and sisters-in-law Christine (Joe & Kay) Nazimek, Paul (Pauline) Huminicki, Walter (Mary & Anna) Huminicki, Mary (John) Trach, Pearl (Walter) Senick, Doreen (Boris) Musick, and her niece Patricia Tennescoe.
Olga was born on December 8, 1928 and raised in Poplarfield. She was very bright and skipped two grades, making her the youngest girl at the Teulon High School, where she lived in residence. In 1950, Olga obtained a Professional First Class Teacher’s Certificate and began her career teaching in Broad Valley. Later, Olga wanted to update her credentials and in 1977, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in History from the University of Manitoba. Olga taught for a total of 43 years, most of which were spent teaching Grade 2 at Winnipeg Beach School.
On October 17, 1953, Olga married Nicholas and moved to the family farm west of Winnipeg Beach. She added farm-assist to her resume, when she helped raise the animals and grow the vegetables that sustained her family through the winter. Olga was a wonderful baker (amazing donuts) and a great cook (could make something out of nothing). Olga loved her grandchildren and was always available to help care for them. She and Nick liked to travel to warm places like Barbados, and to not so warm places like Weyburn to visit Mike and Surrey to visit Antonia. Later in life, Olga developed dementia which stole her precious memories and left her frustrated and bewildered.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Betel Home Foundation for the care and compassion given to Olga during her time there, and the staff at Gilbart Funeral Home for their professional and helpful service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, September 23rd at 11:00 a.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home at 309 Eveline Street in Selkirk. The interment will follow at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Cemetery, Kernstead Road, Winnipeg Beach.
Rest in peace our beloved mother.
