On Saturday, September 14, 2024 at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, after a short hospitalization we bid farewell to our beloved Dad and Grandpa in his 91st year.
Edgar was born in1933 to Ivan and Jessie in Bradford, Ontario. He was the middle of five boys; predeceased by his older brothers Lorne and Earle, and survived by his younger brothers Allan and Donald. Edgar married Patricia FitzRoy and became the loving and supportive Dad to Larry of Ridgeway, Ontario, Heather (Dean) of Parry Sound, Ontario, Pamela (Teresa) of Carcross, Yukon, and Jennifer (Karen) of Thunder Bay, and Grandpa to Michael (Dona) of Caledonia and Abbey of Hamilton, Ontario.
Edgar subsequently made a life with the late Hilda Kislig and embraced his next family. He became the loving and supportive Step-Dad and friend to Isabelle of Orangeville, Ontario and George of Alton, Ontario and Grandpa to Shane (Stephanie) of Orangeville, Ontario, Jesse (Amanda) of Amaranth, Ontario, Joshua (Jackie) of Wasaga Beach, Ontario and Great-Grandpa to Piper, William, Isabella, Cole, Dylan, Lavana, Skyler and Logan.
Edgar headed off to University – not suited for farm life – he started studying theology, then philosophy and topped his Bachelor of Arts Degree off with a Masters of Education. The classroom didn’t suit him either and he eventually settled into employment counselling. Edgar excelled at this new vocation – Special Programs Counsellor and then Counselling Coordinator with Employment and Immigration Canada. He was commended for his particular concern for special needs clients. He spent a long and productive career helping folks find their vocations and gainful employment. During this time he also helped develop aptitude and occupational interest inventories and trained his fellow counsellors in their use.
Edgar was keenly interested in politics, world affairs and philosophy and always had time to talk and listen and not pass judgement. He was always willing to help his extensive family out, especially where it came to the development and pursuit of their career and livelihood. When it came to security in our housing Dad was a generous participant.
Civitan Service Club and the Kidney Foundation both benefitted from his fundraising efforts and several charities benefitted from his benevolence over the years. Dad was an ardent participant in the Grandpals programme, which pairs up grade 5 students with seniors to develop friendships through guided conversations, while in the senior’s home in Orangeville. He was an avid reader, liked a good card game, enjoyed a movie – when he could stay awake for it, loved music and dancing, a good conversation and laughs with friends. We all like to think of Dad as one of the original Environmentalists ~ He was always willing to straighten a nail before buying another, scavenging for or repurposing items, darning his socks, saving paper for reuse if there was still white space on it…
Edgar, Dad, Papa, Grandpa is heartily missed by his extensive family all of whom raced to be by his side and express their love and respect for this gentle man in his last weeks of life. Uncle Edgar will be fondly remembered by his host of nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his friends at the Gardens of Parry Sound, especially his dance partner Mary and his table mate Olive.
Our family would like to thank the staff at the Gardens, and the legion of hospital staff from ER, to Acute Care to Rehab to Palliative Care for the compassionate care they all provided him.
Dad’s favourite quote was “Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”. None of us know the future, so to worry about it is pointless so Live for Today.
Cremation has taken place as was his wish. No formal Celebration will take place – celebrate him as you wish.
