HUER, Hedwig (Hedi) Martha passed away peacefully on September 11th, 2024 at the Bridge Hospice in Warkworth ON. Hedi was in her 94th year. Hedi was married to Hans Huer (predeceased) for 71 years. She had three sisters, Helga (predeceased), Erica (living) and Gertrud (predeceased).
Hans and Hedi left Germany in November 1956, and made Frankford, Ontario their new home. It was there where they worked and raised their four children. Both were involved in the community and were avid square dancers. Hans was a Boy Scout Leader. Hedi was an active member of the U.C.W., taught Sunday School, and, after retirement, became a reading volunteer at Frankford Public School. Hedi enjoyed classical music, literature, and gardening. She could recite epic poems she learned as a child and told us the very ‘Grimm’ versions of fairytales from memory. Her own mother was a Master Seamstress and from an early age Hedi developed her own skills as an exceptional seamstress and knitter – out of necessity at first and later out of love. After Hedi retired from working outside of the home, first at Bata, and later, Murata Erie, she turned her considerable skill and precise eye to quilting. Mom was always pleased to show us her latest “Project in progress”. We were usually on the receiving end of those finished projects.
Both Hedi and Hans had a deep love for their adopted home of Canada. Almost every time we drove through the countryside she reminded us all of how lucky we were to live in such a beautiful place – she revelled in the magic of the natural world and tried to teach us all to wonder at the smallest of things – the world could be transformed by looking closely at a dewdrop!
After Hans passed, Hedi sold her beloved family home. She moved to Crown Ridge Retirement Residence in Trenton Ontario. Here she became re-acquainted with old friends and made new friends around the dining table as well as the puzzle table.
Our lives with her and our memories of her are blessings for her four children and their families; Rolf (Lise), Norbert (Margaret), Margitta (Brian predeceased) and Evelyn (Holly); five grandchildren, Eric (Amanda), Tristan, Kevin (Ayron), Justin and Olivia (Matt); Hunter, her Great-grandson, and many nieces and nephews. All who loved her dearly will never forget her undying love and caring for them.
A graveside service will be held at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Frankford on Saturday, October 19th, 2024 at 1:00p.m. If desired, donations may be made to Frankford United Church, The Bridge Hospice, or Friends of Presqu’ile Memorial Trees. Arrangements are under the care of RUSHNELL FUNERAL HOME, 60 Division Street, Trenton (613-392-2111). To leave a condolence or to share memories of Hedi, please visit rushnellfuneralhomes.com
