We are sad to announce the passing of Margareta Harten (Sawatzky) on Saturday, February 25 at Riverview Gardens in Chatham, Ontario. She is survived by her son Richard Harten (Denise Aube) of Bathurst, New Brunswick and her daughter, Tamra Harten of Chatham, Ontario. Along with 6 grand children (Sascha, Kaitlyn, Deanita, Alana, Kayla and Jeean) and 7 Great Grandchildren (Brandon, Laryssa, Tristynn, Tyrese, Jeremy, Danny and Raphael) and 4 Great Great Grandchildren (Xavier, Jayce, Jaxynn and Hudson)
She is also survived by her sister Susan Schroeder.
She was predeceased by her parents Peter and Maria Sawatzky and brothers and sisters Tina, Annie, Henry, Anna, Carl, Helena, Mary, Nettie, Elizabeth, Peter, David and Eva. She was also predeceased by her former husband, Richard Harten.
She was born March 16, 1937 in Halbstadt, Manitoba, and lived there until 1945 when the family moved to Abbotsford, BC. The family moved back to Manitoba in 1951. She met her future husband Richard in Winnipeg and they married in 1958. They lived for a few years in Victoria BC, before moving to Halifax in 1961.
She worked for several years as a waitress in Halifax/Dartmouth area restaurants, including the Chateau Halifax, Lord Nelson Hotel, Dartmouth Inn, Holiday Inn and Halifax Airport Hotel before moving to Richmond BC in 1980 to work in a Mennonite Intermediate Care Home taking care of Alzheimer patients where she worked until her retirement. After retirement she continued to do volunteer work at the care home until she moved to Chatham, Ontario in 2014. She was loved by both her clientele and her co-workers.
She will be remembered for her deep voice, her quick wit and her easy laugh, her tiny stature and huge heart filled with love, kindness and generosity. Her home was always a welcoming place for friends and family.
Donations in her memory can be made to the Canadian Alzheimer’s Society. There will be no funeral service or visitation at this time.
