Arnie Chestnut Obituary
Arnie Chestnut, beloved spouse, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend, dentist, skier, pilot, sailor, cyclist, golfer, astronomer, artist, story-teller and handyman, died on August 27, 2024 at the age of 79. He is remembered for his indomitable spirit, his love for his family and his refusal to accept limits.
Born on May 10, 1945, in Truro, Nova Scotia, Arnie was the eldest of ten kids. He ran track and worked at the local grocery store in highschool and went on to pursue a university education at Acadia. He joined the military to pay his way through dentistry at Dalhousie which took him to Halifax where he met his future wife, Sally. With characteristic confidence and charm, Arnie declared, on the night they met, that he would marry her. True to his word, they spent an awesome lifetime together, sharing a love that grew deeper each year.
As a dentist in Kingston, Arnie was dedicated to providing exceptional care and made a positive impact on his patients’ lives. Outside of work he had an insatiable curiosity and drive to push boundaries. No challenge was too ambitious, whether building a plane in his garage, or sailing across the Atlantic, he and Sally embraced a shared love of new experiences.
Arnie was deeply passionate about skiing; for him, there was no such thing as a bad ski day. He is a legend on the Whistler Senior Ski Team and well known at the local clinic where his many injuries were attended to.
Arnie was the proud dad of Heidi (Murdo), Shannon (Jamie), and Matt, and he took immense joy in his role as Poppa to Hélène, Anya, Charlie, Maddie, Pippa and Finlay. Hands down, “the world’s best Poppa,” Arnie would play, ski, laugh, encourage and, most importantly, engage deeply in his grandkids’ lives.
Arnie will be profoundly missed by his family and dear friends, but his memory will forever inspire those who knew him to live with courage, curiosity, and joy.
A celebration of Arnie’s life will be held on Sunday, September 1, 2024, from 3:00-5:00 pm at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd. Kingston (please enter through the rear parking lot entrance). Another event will be held this winter in Whistler. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the ALS Society of Canada (donate here).
The mountains are calling, Arnie. We’ll see you on the slopes – rain or shine.
