Obituary for
Ronald John Edwards
After nearly a quarter century of battling mantle cell lymphoma, Ronald John Edwards passed away peacefully at the Timmins and District Hospital on Friday, August 23, 2024. He was 69 years old.
Born in Englehart on June 21, 1955, Ron eventually made his way to Timmins where he was employed as a stationary engineer at the ONR and then Dome Mines. He leaves behind four sisters; Jackie Hasse (Brad), Chris Mills, (Ross), Jean Bott (Jim) and Tina Edwards.
Lorette Leguen was his first wife in the Porcupine area, however, after her untimely passing, he married Maire Leigh Sheppard 32 years ago. What followed was a life surrounded by generally much louder relatives and friends who knew that he could be relied upon to help build a deck or a cottage, or just spend time travelling, fishing, or hanging about a lakefront fire.
Ronnie could tell a wonderful story (non-technical types learned to tune out the arcane details about flywheels or sidewall conveyor belts) because the ending was always worth it, and he took delight in retelling everyone’s best jokes that he knew remained hilarious but they had long forgotten.
A quiet perfectionist when it came to doing pretty much any activity, Ron had a garage workshop that reflected his organized and thoughtful way of life, and tackled a variety of sports as an adult (including cross country skiing and cycling) that a farm boy growing up in mid-century northern Ontario was not necessarily surrounded by.
But most of his spare time was directed at loving, entertaining, and mentoring his numerous nieces, nephews, and younger cousins from the Beaulieu, Edwards, and Sheppard families. Above all he had a special place in his heart for the widening circle of great nephews, nieces (Lula, Arlo, Kacey-Jane, Kayden and his buddy Robin).
In the end relatives and friends- from the Maritimes to BC – travelled to be by his bedside, which was a clear testament to how important and special this man was for so many people. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mario Ciccone for decades of dedicated care in Timmins, Dr. Michael Crump at Toronto’s Princess Margaret Hospital, and the Hospice care team at TADH.
Ron’s life was a shining example of quiet strength, enduring love, and the joy of simple pleasures. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
In Ronnie’s memory, remembrance donations to the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in Toronto would be greatly appreciated by the family. Then funeral arrangements are entrusted with the MIRON-WILSON FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION AND RECEPTION CENTRE, 150 Balsam St. S., Timmins, Ontario
