Brian’s Obituary
It is very profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Richard Clements. Long time resident of Berwyn, Brian was born December 22, 1950 in Edmonton to James and Mary Clements. The youngest of 3 children, Brian moved to the Peace Country in the late 1950’s. It was here that he grew up and met a beautiful young lady named Judy Evans. They married in 1971 and celebrated 50 years of marriage just a few short years ago. It was also in Berwyn where Brian and Judy made their home and welcomed two precious girls to their family. Jaime Rae in 1977 and Allison Marie in 1981. Brian lovingly referred to them as “My Jaime” and “My Allison” and they were the light of his life. He loved them dearly and was so very proud of them. Brian worked hard all of his life and dedicated many years to successfully running Shaw Motors. A fixture of Berwyn, the GM dealership was an integral part of the community until the closing in 1996. Brian was also instrumental in establishing ambulance service in Berwyn and drove the ambulance for many years. He was also involved as a firefighter and served as Berwyn’s Fire Chief and he served with the air cadets. From there, Brian took on many other jobs. He worked for Central Peace Contracting and then ran his Nodwell to help in various firefighting efforts around the province. Most recently, Brian helped his daughter Allison run her business, Fern’s Greenhouse. Anyone that knew Brian knew that he liked to keep his hands busy and was always tinkering and trying to find ways to solve new problems. Allison and Brian worked side by side to keep Fern’s running efficiently. Brian was always on the run here and there delivering flowers but he liked to stay busy and so was always happy, especially because it meant he got to spend more time with Allison.
Brian was a family man as well. Quiet and kind but mischievous and always with a great sense of humour, he loved to play jokes on his grandchildren. Presents wrapped in duct tape and impossible to open were the highlight of every Christmas. As they kids got older, they returned the prank to Grandpa and many laughs were had watching Grandpa open heavily duct taped packages! Keely, Keira, Sophie and Callum grew up learning so much from Grandpa Brian and having fun along the way. From fishing to hunting, to going to the trapline to simply learning how to fix it, Brian was a constant fixture in his grandchildren’s lives and he taught them all he could. He was proud of each of them and took every opportunity to spend time with them.
Later in life, Brian was diagnosed with cancer. One to never give up the fight, he fought hard alongside his granddaughter Keira who was also battling cancer at the same time and they both won the battle! Although it was not easy and it certainly took a physical toll on Brian, he never gave up and fought so very hard to the end. His family was so proud and amazed at all that he endured. But he did it with grace and with a smile on his face and charm in his approach. He often had nurses and hospital staff commenting on what a character he was! That would come as no surprise to anyone who knew him. Anyone who knew him would also know that Brian had a heart of gold and would give the shirt off his back to help. He was the kindest of gentleman and that legacy lives on in his family. You worked hard Brian. You are deeply loved and will be greatly missed. Rest easy now as your work here is done.
Brian is survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy (Evans); daughter, Jaime; daughter, Allison (Layne) and grandchildren Keely, Keira, Sophie and Callum. He is also survived by his brother Hugh (Val) and their family and by his sister Trudy (Martin) and their family, along with many others in his extended family that he always worked hard to stay in touch with. Brian was predeceased by his parents and mother and father-in-law. He is also predeceased by his nephew, Kevin Clements and by his nieces, Debbie Mycek, Cindy Wesolowski and Mindy Zolinski.
A funeral service for the late Brian Clements will be held Thursday, August 29,2024 at 11am at the Elks Community Hall in Berwyn. Refreshments and a time of remembrance to follow.
Donations can be made in Brian’s name to the Ronald McDonald House in Edmonton, Alberta.
