Obituary For Alexa Oilund
November 14, 1940 – August 21, 2024
In the blink of an eye, our mom, Alexa Oilund, is home with Jesus. Her zest for life and love for people along with her smile was her trademark which we will all miss. Alexa passed away peacefully surrounded by her family after a short but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in Grande Prairie on Wednesday August 21, 2024, at the age of 83. Mom’s wishes were to pass away at home, and she was able to do so with the devoted care of family and friends.
Alexa was born in Grande Prairie, AB, on November 14, 1940, to Ruth and John Reynolds. The family farmed in the Eaglesham area and in the early 50’s, they moved to Grande Prairie. Alexa met the love of her life, Lester Oilund during her high school years and they were married on October 12, 1963.
Alexa chose to devote her life to raising her family and was a stay-at-home mom throughout her sons, Greg and Darren’s, lives. She was their cheerleader in their various sporting endeavours. Because of her welcoming nature and desire to feed people, the Oilund home was the hub for the neighborhood kids. Alexa was the biggest support for her husband Lester while he worked out of town logging throughout the week. Every weekend was like a honeymoon for Alexa and Lester.
One of Alexa’s greatest joys was hosting dinners for friends and family. There was no such thing as “potluck” at Alexa’s home. She would prepare the entire meal. Guests would crowd into the living room, dining room and downstairs. In Alexa’s mind, there was always room for one more guest.
In her 40’s, fitness became a huge part of Alexa’s life. She entered her first triathlon at the age of 45 and won her age group category. This was the beginning of many years of fitness including walking, hiking, swimming, skiing and working out at Curves.
Alexa was devastated by Lester’s sudden passing in 2015. Friendships became Alexa’s lifeline. Alexa loved people and was genuinely interested in them. She could not help herself but invite random ladies to join their walking group. This was the birth of the walking group known as the “Sole Sista’s”. This group did more than walk. They became a support system for each other and had a whole lot of fun along the way. Friday nights were known as Happy Hour. They would share food and laughs and have theme parties like Oscar Night, High English Tea and bought fancy hats for the Derby. Alexa was the glue that brought this group together.
Alexa is survived by her sons Greg (Carmen) and Darren (Chris), her grandchildren Sarah (Stephen) King, Zach Havens, Brett (Delicia) Hoff, Macy (Rex Barfett) Hoff, and Rylan Hoff, her sisters-in-law Peggy Reynolds, Doris Reynolds, and Arlene Currie, and many other cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Clow, Dr. Barreth, Save On Pharmacy and Home Care. A special thank you to Nurse Practitioner Mike Wilson who was attentive to Alexa’s every single need.
The love and care shown by her Sole Sista’s profoundly impacted Alexa’s family. Thank to all who are one of Alexa’s Sole Sista’s.
