John McIntyre DeWeese
June 15, 1935 – August 19, 2024
John was born in Swalwell AB on the family farm on June 15, 1935. This came as a shock to his parents, Helen and Lloyd DeWeese, who were in Calgary at the time, shopping for extra last names.
John’s birth was attended by his uncle, Harvey Eliot, MD, who may have missed the ethics class in medical school about not attending relatives. No one could complain about this, however, as Dr Eliot was the only physician who could actually locate Swalwell on a map.
Two years later, Helen and Lloyd welcomed John’s younger sister, Margaret Jean. John was somewhat less pleased with this development, but reconciled himself to having a younger sister once she was old enough to procure comic books for him.
John and Jean spent an idyllic childhood on the family farm, which included daily trudges uphill both ways through copious snow banks to attend the frigid local one room school house during The Great Depression.
The two remained close for some time.
We think John graduated high school in 1952, but no one alive today remembers for sure.
John joined the work force and was generally well regarded by his co-workers for several weeks.
In 1958, Cupid’s arrow found John, but he recovered after a short stay in the ICU, and was joined in wedded bliss with Marion Beatrice Corrine (nee Lee). Their courtship was marked by many adventures, only one of which resulted in an overnight stay in the Calgary city jail. John is predeceased by his uncle, the honourable Charles Bennett, Court of Queen’s Bench.
In 1959, Marion and John were blessed when a stork was blown off target by an unseasonable Chinook, resulting in the arrival of their son, Brian Jeffrey. Eleven years later saw the arrival of their daughter, Valerie Ruth.

John was known for his many and varied interests, the only two of which we can mention here being his Ebikes and Bluegrass.
John was an accomplished fiddelist and very much enjoyed Bluegrass festivals and old time fiddle competitions. John has won many awards for bluegrass fiddle, sometimes while competing against other musicians.
In all that he did, John M. DeWeese was notable for his dry sense of humour, his joy of life, his service to his community, and his enduring affection for his family and friends.
John was always ready to help out, or throw someone a line, usually a funny one.
He is beloved, and is deeply missed.
