Edith’s Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Edith Rose Marie LaBine on August 10, 2024, at the age of 74. Born in Steinbach, MB, on July 10, 1950, Edith grew up in the Red Lake area alongside her parents and three brothers.
In her early years, Edith graduated from university with an arts degree, traveled to Europe, and later applied her many talents to running several successful businesses in Red Lake with her husband, Barry Labine. The B&E Restaurant was a thriving hub in the community for many years, and Birch Lake Lodge Resort attracted guests from all over the world. Throughout her life, Edith bravely battled illness from a young age, but she never allowed it to deter her spirit or sense of humour.
As a wife and mother, Edith was a pillar of strength, wisdom, and love to her family. She and Barry married in 1978 and shared a full life together, raising their two children into successful adults. Michael and Meaghan LaBine, born in 1979 and 1982 respectively, were Edith’s world. She was immensely proud of her children, doing everything in her power to give them the best in life. Even towards her final days, Edith called her children every day just to ask about their day and say, “I love you.” This soulful warmth was felt by all, including animals, who were naturally drawn to her wild and welcoming nature. Edith had an extraordinary gift for empathically connecting with animals, particularly the family dogs, Oscar and Henry, whom she rescued as young puppies and held dear to her heart.
Edith showed endearing compassion and thoughtfulness towards her friends, enjoying a good cup of coffee, a glass of wine, or a game of cribbage over stimulating conversation and clever jests. She was elegant and feisty, strong with a gentle heart, curious, and analytical. People were drawn to her fierce intelligence, warmth, humor and insight, qualities that enabled her to form enduring friendships that felt like family.
Her desire for meaning and truth guided her spirituality and connection to God, as she walked the path toward enlightenment. Edith was a woman of many hidden talents, including gourmet cooking that fed the soul, a taste for unique flavors, playing the piano, and possessing a sharp political wit. When gathered around the table with her, we were nourished in body, heart, and mind, and we were never left wanting.
Words alone cannot capture the essence of such a beautiful soul, and these sentiments are just a glimpse of the magnificent woman Edith was. She will live on in the hearts of many and continue to guide us toward our better selves.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Edith’s honor at Glad Tidings Church in Red Lake on Saturday, August 17th, at 1 p.m., followed by a luncheon. Those wishing to make donations can do so to Glad Tidings Church. We welcome all who wish to share in the memory of Edith to join us in this celebration.
