Obituary For John Gordon Braun
March 6, 1927 – August 6, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Gordon Braun. John passed peacefully, surrounded by his beloved wife, Joan, and loving family, in Grande Prairie, Alberta, at Prairie Lake Hospice. John was a caring Husband, Father, Papa, Brother, and Uncle.
John Gordon Braun was born in Swalwell, Alberta on March 6, 1927 to Henry and Margaret Braun. While John was a young boy the family moved to a homestead in La Glace, Alberta. John was not cut out to be a farmer and, with his parents’ blessing, he set out for Vancouver to embark on his education in Engineering. Upon finishing his schooling, John returned to Grande Prairie, Alberta. There he started his remarkable construction career and business, commencing with John and Don’s Construction and then embarking on his own path to start Trio Grande Construction and Trio Grande Management.
John is leaving behind a legacy of hard work, honesty, and integrity. A prominent general contractor in the Grande Prairie, Alberta area, John dedicated his life to building both commercial and residential projects with exceptional skill and commitment. His unwavering standards of quality and his honest approach to every job earned him the respect and admiration of his clients, employees, sub-trades, and colleagues. John built many homes, apartment complexes and commercial properties. Matricia Towers, The Grande Prairie Curling Club, Prairie Sunrise Apartments to name only a few of his many accomplishments. His last major venture was a luxury bungalow townhome complex, located within the Dunes on 17 gated community. He completed this beautiful project in his early 80’s and remained an active and highly valued member of this community until his final days before entering Hospice. John was STILL mowing the townhome strata lawn right through the summer of 2023, at the age of 96.
Even after his retirement, John’s passion for his work remained evident as he continued to consult, sharing his extensive knowledge and experience with the community. His contributions to the field were marked by a steadfast adherence to integrity, ensuring that every project he touched was completed with the highest level of professionalism.
John was not only a gentleman; he was also a gentle man. He was a man of faith, possessing a calm demeanour, authentic to his core, proudly a mentor to many, sharp dresser (ask the nurses in Emerg!), mathematician extraordinaire (Kathy apologizes for the torture of her math homework), classy, honest, and patient. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to always work to their full potential.
John had a passion for all things outdoors; camping, fishing, hunting, dirt bike and argo excursions to name a few. He was an avid skier, curler, and golfer well into his senior years. As a young man, John enjoyed numerous sports, including hockey and baseball. John and Joan were constant companions and life partners, both in work and play. They were fortunate to share their love of travel together, including many winters travelling south together, having adventures, and forming friendships along the way.
John is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joan, and his children: Garth (Katrin), Janice (Cary), Wanda (Neal), and Kathy (Craig). Grandchildren – Jessica, Jarrod, Alexis, Aysha, Kalen, Peter (Robyn), Zac, Aaron, Kaylynn (Brandt), Leysan and Kjell, as well as special nieces – Edie (Howie) and Lori (Roman) and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Margeret, brother – Henry, sister – Mary, sisters – Annie and Margaret and son – Darrell.
Rest in peace, John/Dad/Papa. Your legacy lives on in the values you embodied and the many lives you touched through your work and our family. You will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for your dedication, honesty, and the profound impact you had. We take comfort in our memories of your love, laughter, and guidance.
We are eternally grateful to the physicians and medical staff that took great care of John/Dad over the last two and a half years. Dr. Erik Beuker (Amanda, assistant), the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital staff, Dr. Daniel Prada, and the exceptionally caring staff at Prairie Lake Hospice.
We, as a family, are honouring John’s wishes to have a private family Celebration of Life at Two Lakes campground, where we spent many weekends creating memories that will last a lifetime.
