Elma Flewell Obituary
Elma Marion Flewell Neuman nee Vance went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 31, 2024. She was born on May 11, 1922, to Henry and Ella Vance who lived on the 5th Line of Uxbridge. Siblings included Russell, Emerson and Jean. She attended Quaker Hill Public School and graduated from Uxbridge High School. World War 2 was looming, so she married her childhood sweetheart John (Jack) Flewell before he was dispatched to the conflict overseas. She became a single parent raising their son Ronald with the help of her family.
Workers were needed at the Ajax Munitions Factory. So, to aid in the war effort, she took a supervisory position making sure all the ammunition was up to the appropriate standard. At the war’s end and Jack’s return they farmed on the 6th Line where 3 more children were born-Reginald, Carolyn and Debra.
Moving to Oshawa was a big change for the family. Elma took a position at Eaton’s in the accounting office until she followed her dream to become a teacher. She attended Toronto Teachers’ College and was immediately hired at Ritson Road Public School. Later she moved to Queen Elizabeth School to teach Special Education.
When she retired in 1974 to be with Jack, she thoroughly enjoyed watching her 6 grandchildren – Donna and Susan Flewell, Garrett, Geoffrey and Genna Neuman and Michael Flewell mature. Elma never let her world grow small as she bowled in a league, played bridge with the Oshawa Seniors, belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary at the Oshawa Legion, played Scrabble on the computer with family and people from all over the world and attended St. Lukes Presbyterian Church.
After Jack’s passing, she married John Neuman and had 20 years of travelling, going to dances and appreciating the great grandchildren – Ben, Ali, Jack, Grant, Hayden, Stella Rose and Owen.
For the last six years she resided at Bowmanville Creek Retirement Home. A big thank you to staff and all the unsung heroes who assisted Mom in her final days. It does take a village to care for our elderly.
A funeral service will be celebrated at Low & Low Funeral Home, 23 Main Street South, Uxbridge on Tuesday August 6, 2024, at 2:00 PM, with visitation beginning at 1:00 PM. Interment Uxbridge Cemetery. Reception to follow at the funeral home.
