Higgins, Calvin Douglas – It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our cherished husband, father, and grandfather, Calvin Douglas Higgins, of Brookvale, Nova Scotia, at his home on July 30, 2024.
Born in Middle Musquodoboit in 1952, Calvin was a son of the late Douglas Kenneth Higgins and Edith Grace (Hutchinson) Andrews. He was predeceased by sisters, Sheila Andrews and Carolyn Higgins, and infant brother, Leonard.
Calvin will be forever remembered by his wife of 49 years, Martha (Bellefontaine); children, Jill (Michael Ross) Higgins, Casey (Tamaia Wallwork) Higgins, and Emma (Devon) Norris; grandchildren, Isla, Isabella, Rocco, Gia, Dillon, and Alexina; siblings, Donna (Francis) Fraser, Philip (Lorna) Higgins, and Irene (Tim) Bowser; brother-in-law, Marty Andrews; and many nieces, nephews, friends, co-workers, and neighbours.
Calvin was the protector and provider of his family. He was hardworking and dedicated, not only in his adult years but also in helping to provide for his family when he was growing up. He was so proud of his children’s accomplishments. Known as CD to his grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, they will surely miss his teasing and playful ways. He was renowned for his quick-witted jokes, always bringing a smile to the faces of those around him. His sense of humor was a cornerstone of his personality.
His childhood in Upper Musquodoboit instilled in him a lifelong passion for sports, particularly softball, in which he excelled. He played with various teams and most notably, the infamous Musquodoboit Marquis.
Calvin became involved in the Scouting Movement and coaching softball through the Musquodoboit Recreation Association as a way of being involved with his children’s activities.
His love for golf brought him immense joy and many lasting friendships within the River Oaks Community. He will be missed by his Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday golfing buddies, whom he played with on his final day.
His expertly arranged woodpiles were a source of pride and admiration, reflecting his dedication and hard work. The New York Times puzzle was a daily hobby, and he was known for his joy in cooking. His honey garlic spareribs and pork fried rice were unmatched. There would never be a dish that included cheese, however. He always enjoyed a game of cribbage, though the stakes were much higher when playing with his siblings.
Calvin enjoyed a fulfilling career as a lineman with Nova Scotia Power and continued his passion for storm-chasing after retirement with Tri-Wire Line Construction Inc. His knowledge and work were highly respected by all of his co-workers.
At Calvin’s request, there will be no visitation or service. A Celebration of Life will be held with family and loved ones at a later date. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Arimathea Funeral Cooperative, Upper Musquodoboit.
Calvin was a dedicated sponsor of children and communities through World Vision, and a supporter of the Musquodoboit Valley Food Bank Association, contributing generously to both causes over many years. In his memory, we invite you to make donations to either organization, or help someone in need, continuing his legacy of compassion and care.
