Gordon Henry Weatherby – 88, Truro. It is with
great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband,
father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gordon, on Sunday, July
21, 2024, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, with family by his
side, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Gordon was born in Truro and was the only child of the late
Hartley and Margaret (Rutherford) Weatherby. Gordon was a well-known
Truro businessman, who along with his parents and wife Joan, owned and
operated Hartley C. Weatherby Hardware on Prince Street for 69
years.
Gordon was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, where
over the years he served as Eucharist minister, on parish council, and
several other committees. He also volunteered with Kane’s
Kitchen and St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was a founding member of
Council 6633 Knights of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight and
District Deputy. He was also a member of The Fourth Degree 2073 Father
Kinsella Assembly, where he served as Faithful
Navigator.
Gordon was very involved in the community over the years with
Truro Fire Brigade, Cubs and Scouts, St. John Ambulance, Civil
Defence, Truro Pleasure Skating Club, 77 Arrowhead Squadron Air
Cadets, and a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro. He
was a member of Colchester Regional Hospital Auxiliary, where he
volunteered with the coffee shop, gift shop, and hospital Hub
Bub.
Gordon belonged to two special groups that were close to his
heart where he shared special times and wonderful memories; The
Fabulous Five and a men’s group with members from Immaculate
Conception Parish. Thanks to each of you for all you did for him, you
are truly family.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joan (Smith);
daughter, Sharon, Truro; son, Stephen (Zoe), Valley; granddaughter,
Hailey Lemmon, Truro; step-grandchildren, Michelle Staples (George),
Jamie Staples (Laura); seven step-great-grandchildren; former
son-in-law, Gerry Lemmon (Angie) (Hailey’s dad);
brother-in-law, Eric Newell (Thelma); sisters-in-law, Joan Smith,
Donna Newell-Stewart (John), Sheila Newell (Lawrence), Laurie Clyke;
several nieces, nephews and cousins; special cousins, Gerry and
Carolyn Newell, who were always there for him over the years; loving
friends, Cathy Anderson and Larry and Minnie O’Hara. He will
also be greatly missed by his canine companion of the past five years,
Oakley.
Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his
father-in-law and mother-in-law, Morris and Ella Newell;
brothers-in-law, John Smith, Robert Newell, Roy Newell, Allan Newell;
sister-in-law, Opal Newell.
The family would like to thank the staff and physicians at
Colchester East Hants Health Centre for their recent wonderful care.
Thanks to Doctor Christopher Cook and Melinda, as well as the VON who
have provided tremendous care over the past few years.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner
Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro where Gordon’s family
will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Monday, July 29, 2024. Mass of
Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2024,
at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince Street,
Truro, Father Jim O’Connor officiating. Reception will
follow in Campbell Hall. Interment will follow at a later date. Family
flowers only. If so desired, donations in Gordon’s memory to
St. Vincent de Paul Society, VON Colchester Branch, or a charity of
choice are welcomed.
