The matriarch of our family, Shirley Alice Gilbert (nee Lyons) passed away on Thursday July 18, 2024, at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late Murray Alvin Gilbert. She will be missed greatly by her 4 children Dale Nelson (Jon), Marlyn Scott (David), Wayne (Mary Anne), Darcy (Brenda), her grandchildren Trina, Kirt, Kristy, Ryan, Regan, Melissa, Angela, John, Miranda, Stuart, Meagan and Harrison and 20 great grandchildren.
Family was everything for Mom, but her friends were important to her too. Whoever needed anything, Mom was the first to volunteer her help. A friend once described her as “little red riding hood”, because she came to their door unannounced wearing a red coat, carrying a basket full of food, when she heard that she was ill. Shirley was a founding member of the local chapter of Al-Anon and was active right up until her passing. Many participants in the organization were the recipients of Mom’s counselling and advice. Shirley was a volunteer at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, in fact she was the longest serving volunteer with the organization, volunteering in the gift shop and the quilt room for 35 years. Art in the Park was another organization that Mom helped get started, and from her booth of over 20 years, many quilts and knitting articles have been distributed world-wide. Shirley assisted with the Breakfast Program at a local public school. She volunteered at Mary Street Boutique, a gently used clothing store. In fact, if Mom heard of a need that she could help with, she did it, driving friends to appointments in the city, knitting pneumonia garments for premature babies, or simply giving a plate of home-made goodies to someone for sweeping snow off her car. Shirley had a big heart, and a lot of people are going to miss her laughter, her positive attitude and her straightforward approach to life!
As per Mom’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Torrance Funeral Home (89 Bowes St. Parry Sound, ON.)
As expressions of sympathy, if desired, donations can be made to the local chapter of Al-Anon or the West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation.
