It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen “Eleni” Damianakos. Surrounded by family, Helen passed away peacefully, at the age of 96, on Tuesday July 16, 2024.
Helen was predeceased by her parents Vasilios Damianakos and Panagiota Giannakos and her siblings Konstantino, Niko, Ioanni, and Eleftheria.
Survived by her loving sisters Stavroula (late Gregorios Koutakos), Paraskevi (George Grivas), Georgia (late Vasilis Papadoliakos), her brother in-law Paul Vamvakitis (late Eleftheria) and sister in laws Kali Damianakos (late Konstantino) Maria Damianakos (late Niko) Suzanne Damianakos (late Ioanni). She leaves behind her many nieces, nephews, grand and great- grand nieces and nephews and friends.
She was the eldest of 8 children, born in the village of Vasilaki, Greece. Helen had a passion for cooking and baking, which she refined during her many years at the Greek Embassy in Ottawa. Her hospitality was unmatched and truly exceptional – she had the remarkable ability to whip up 5-course meals on short notice for unexpected guests.
Being an extremely hard-working, generous and kind-hearted soul, Helen found joy in gardening and helping others. She will be remembered by many for her faith, love, commitment and contribution to the Greek community and the Philoptochos, here in Ottawa. She will be deeply missed by her family and numerous friends, who will always remember her for her generous spirit and selflessness. The family would like to thank the staff at the Civic Hospital for their care and compassion over the last few months.
May she rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love of those who have gone before her.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 22nd from 10:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church (1315 Prince of Wales Drive). Funeral service will follow at 11:30 a.m. followed by entombment at Pinecrest Cemetery.
