Ray Cornish Obituary
We are saddened to announce the passing of Ray (Rayfield) Phillip Cornish on July 14th, 2024. He left this world peacefully at Stratford General Hospital.
Ray was born on January 11th, 1932, in Downie Township on Glenvenue Farm, youngest child of the late Lewis and Hazel (Thistle) Cornish.
Ray is survived by his wife of 66 years, Ruth Marie Cornish (Schlotzhauer) and his daughters Janine Wittman and Judy Kay (Gwen O’Reilly). He was predeceased by his son, Peter Rayfield Cornish. Ray will also be missed by his grandchildren Tracy Kay (Neal Dodge), Heather Kay (Ryan Crane), Thomas Wittman (Katheryn) and Alana Wittman (Graham Crowell), and by great grandchildren Lyra, Adelaide and Ezra.
Ray was the last of his siblings to pass on. He was predeceased by sisters Kathleen Cardwell (Lester), Jean Lawrence (Doug), Ruby Murray (Glenn) and Louise Russell (Edward), brother Kenneth Cornish (Glady) and one brother who died in infancy.
Ray was a beloved member of Ruth’s family. He is survived by his sister-in-law Jean Curtis, brother-in-law Rob Schlotzhauer (Claire), Glen Schlotzhauer (Karen), Murray Schlotzhauer (Heather), sister-in-law Melba Bingeman (Dan) and Lyn Schlotzhauer (Tim Whitlock). Predeceased by brothers-in-law Paul Schlotzhauer, Herb Curtis and sister-in-law Dale James (Gerry).
Ray was a member of the Community of Christ Church and a lifetime resident of Stratford. He began his career as a pharmacy delivery boy and was inspired to himself become a pharmacist and co-owner of Sinclair Pharmacy. Ray loved to serve the customers of Sinclair Pharmacy and regaled the staff behind the counter with his terrible puns from 1965 to 1993. Ray was also central in the development of the Stratford Tennis and Badminton Clubs, and a plaque commemorating this contribution hangs in the Stratford Rotary Complex. His athletic accomplishments were impressive – he was considered a top tennis and badminton player in Stratford and won many national and international championships in badminton. One of his great achievements was hiking the majority of the Appalachian Trail over a 10 year period with his friend Perry Hill and others.
Most recently, Ray lived at Greenwood Court with Ruth, first in the apartments and then in the Loft. Ray’s family members would like to thank and acknowledge the caregivers and staff of Greenwood Court for the wonderful care provided to Ray. We would also like to thank them for the care provided to Ray during the final weeks in the Stratford General Hospital.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the W.G. Young Funeral Home, 430 Huron Street, Stratford on Friday, July 19, from 6-8 p.m. and on Saturday at Community of Christ, 226 Forman Avenue, Stratford at 10 am. A Service for Ray will be held at 11 am with a reception to follow. Memorial donations in Ray’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society Huron Perth or the Stratford General Hospital. www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
