Gibson, Donald “Hoot” died July 1, 2024 at Pretty River Residence in Collingwood, ON in his 83rd year. Hoot was lovingly cared for by his wife of 57 years, Bonnie. He will be greatly missed by his three children, Grant (Jenny), Julie (Jeff) and Bryce (Liz), his adored five grandchildren Emily, Tommy, Luke, Blake and Graydon, as well as his sister Joan Cook (Bryn, predeceased), and his brother Jim. Hoot had many nieces and nephews, brothers-and-sisters-in-law, as well as a wide circle of lifelong friends, with all of whom he loved to share a good laugh. Despite suffering from dementia later in life, Hootie thankfully never lost his sense of humour or mischievous grin.
Don grew up in Thornhill with his parents (Grant and Margaret, predeceased) and went to U of T for his Undergrad and Law Degrees. His time on the Varsity Blues Football Team remained a point of pride, resulting in a Vanier Cup and more importantly, many lasting friendships as well as his beloved nickname “Hoot”. After completing a Master of Laws in London, UK, Don spent most of his law career as a partner at McCarthy Tétrault in Toronto. He was an active member of the Energy Group, including work with Artic Gas Study Limited and being a founding board member of The Canadian Council for Public-Private Partnerships.
After retirement, Hoot and Bonnie moved to their much-loved farm in Collingwood. Most of us picture Hootie on his tractor, cigar in mouth, headphones blaring the CBC, tending to his apple orchard with our dog Josie by his side. He and Bonnie took full advantage of the escarpment, including golfing at Blue Mountain Golf Club, skiing at Osler Bluff, and volunteering with the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust. Hoot never passed up the chance to take in a Pointe-au-Baril sunset, party with friends, or end the night with a loud viewing of the Last Waltz.
Hoot enjoyed a full and wonderful life, loving Bonnie to the end, and always keenly interested in what his children and grandchildren were doing. His family is forever grateful for the life Hoot provided and the time we spent all together. We will miss him dearly.
The Gibson Family would like to thank the staff at Pretty River Residence, the Collingwood Hospital, VON, and Dr. Mike Lewin for their incredible care. There will be a Celebration of Hoot’s life this Fall. In lieu of flowers, please donate to CGMH or the Hospice Georgian Triangle.
