It is with heavy hearts that the family of David George Himmelman, 81, of Bayport, announces his passing on Monday, December 19, 2022 at the South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater.
David was born in Jarvis, ON on October 23, 1941, to Wilson and Francis Himmelman. As a boy, his family returned to Nova Scotia, where his father was employed with Trans Canada Airlines. Later they relocated to Fredericton, NB, where David graduated from Fredericton High School (FHS) in 1960.
Boyhood sports included curling, golf, and sailing. However, a lifelong passion was ignited when he earned his Private Air Pilot’s License in January 1960. Flying aircraft would enthrall him for the rest of his days.
David joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in March 1965. He completed basic training at “N” Division in Ottawa, ON. His first posting was to “D” Division in Northern MB, where he served at various detachments.
David and his dear wife Barbara Dawn Burpee were married in September 1967 in Fredericton, NB. From there, the newlyweds travelled to Flin Flon, MB, where they had many happy adventures with their new colleagues and enjoyed the natural beauty of the area.
In July 1969 David transferred to Newfoundland. They spent the first three of their next thirty years on the island in Cornerbrook. Postings from 1972 to 1996 included Harbour Grace, Buchans, Botwood and Gander, from where David retire.
David had an abiding love for Newfoundland and cherished his friends there. He deeply loved the outdoors and spent many years hunting in the fall and snowmobiling during the winter months. David flew his own airplane, a Piper Cherokee for a number of years from Gander airport.
David and Barbara moved to Bayport, NS in 1988, where they enjoyed their home to the fullest. Throughout the years, David was active in curling and golf, owned several boats, was a member of the Nova Scotia Schooner Association, and sat on the Board of the Lunenburg Golf Club. He was a skilled craftsman who spent many hours in his woodshop turning bowls on his lathe.
David is survived by his wife Barbara; son, Mike Himmelman (Val), Winnipeg, MB; sister, Anne (Eric) Brown; sister-in-law, Eleanor Burpee, both of Fredericton, NB; son-in-law, Robert Marin, Quebec City, QC; grandchildren, Jonah Marin, Quebec City, QC, Thomas “Tommy” and Chelsey Himmelman, Winnipeg, MB, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
David was predeceased by his parents, father-and–mother-in-law David and Phyllis Burpee; daughter, Devon Marin (nee Himmelman); and brother-in-law Ray Burpee.
A service of celebration will be held at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy #3, Lunenburg on Thursday, December 29, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Robert Gardner, officiating. If you feel comfortable masks are preferred.
