May Campbell Obituary
May Campbell passed away peacefully at 5:10 pm on Friday, June 28 at the age of 95. She was loved dearly by her family and friends and known for her kind spirit and flirty, dancing eyes. Yes, even at 95 they sparkled and made you think you were looking into the eyes of a young woman. May was young at heart, busy and active with several weekly outings with friends. You would always find her at coffee shops, at one of her many meetings, carpet bowling or on her yoga mat.
May was born on March 26, 1929 in Blue River, BC so experienced the last year of the Roaring 20s, the Great Depression, the Second World War, saw a man walk on the moon and her husband, Dave, served in the Korean War.
In her youth May was an accomplished speed skater and was a trail blazer, being in the 25 percent of working women in 1948 when she established her career in banking. Other career highlights included working in mill planning at the Granisle Mine and when she worked at the Nanaimo Association for Mentally Handicapped People she took a group of adult clients on a trip to Disneyland.
She had a life filled with adventure, great travels and was a life-long learner, going back to college for her accounting degree when she was well into her 50’s. She was also savvy with new technology and social media… not always easy with advancing years.
She was an extraordinary artist and created beautiful scenic paintings on canvas, porcelain and tile. From playing bridge indoors to camping and golfing outside her interests were diverse and she was always up for new experiences like – just this past June she travelled to Saskatchewan for her son and daughter-in-law’s 50th wedding anniversary.
To quote one of her lines when she was told she should be giving in and getting to bed. “No, I don’t want to miss anything”.
She had a life well lived….
A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace,
From someone who has made our world
A brighter, better place
It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears,
With friendships formed and good times shared
And laughter through the years.
A life well lived is a legacy
Of joy and pride and pleasure,
A living, lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure.
