Douglas Young Obituary
March 23, 1936 – June 27, 2024
TOGETHER FOREVER
On Thursday June 27th 2024 , DOUGLAS YOUNG (William Douglas Golden) shed his earthly pain and made a graceful exit to join the love of his life, Patricia (Weir). Eighty-eight years ago Doug was born to George Young and Beatrice Webber in the Marmora area. Both predeceased along with all his siblings, Bernice Cox, Blanche Mumby, Eileen Barrons, Frank Young and Joe Young. Doug and Pat were blessed with 50 wonderful years of marriage and generated 3 children from that love. Diane (Ken) Larmer, Connie (Jim) Huffman and Dan (Laurie) Young. They, in kind, provided 4 grandchildren, Matt (Sheena) Larmer, Joshua Young, Jennesse (Brad) Van Gestel and Jonathan (Aimee) Young. As well, Doug was blessed with 6 great grandsons, Evan Larmer, Jaxson, Brody and Easton Young, Beau Van Gestel and Theodore Young and another one on the way! Doug took on the task of building their own house in Marmora where they started their family. Later moving to Keene where they renovated a home and raised their children. Doug was a social and athletic one – it would prove to be one of his super powers! He was a volunteer Firefighter for Otonabee Township Fire Hall and held the position of Fire Chief for 22 of those years. He spent many Christmas Eves popping into the neighbourhood houses in Keene dressed as Santa delighting the wide eyed children of the village. Doug and his wife, Pat started girls hockey in Keene and devoted many volunteer hours to their daughters teams. Doug played mens league and old timers hockey, treasuring many friendships and connections from those years. Same at the ball diamond. Doug spent his working life at Outboard Marine Corp, Shoppers Home Health Care and for his best friend Hilliard Berridge at Otonabee Builders; where he developed further friendships with all that knew him. His retirement was filled with keeping the lawnmowers of Peterborough running smoothly from his home at 65 Morrow St. More opportunities to be social! Throughout the years he was the go to guy helping all the seniors on his street. Doug together with Pat, were family people through and through, heavily invested in all 3 generations of their children/grandchildren/great grandchildrens’ activities. They made memorable camping trips taking the family across Canada from the East to the West coasts. There is not a family get together that doesn’t involve one of these stories followed by much laughter and further embellishments. Tragically, after 50 years almost to the day, Pat passed away at the young age of 68 (2004). Family and friends lifted him up through those heartbreaking times. Doug threw himself back into his family for the next 20 years, always knee deep in a renovation at one of his children’s homes or at the rink. Always always being of service! With the support of family, friends and neighbours; it allowed him to stay in his home until just a few months ago. We would like to thank family, friends and neighbours over the years for their wonderful support; with special thanks to Kievan Lonergan, Shirley Hay, Patti Redpath and Diana Dykstra-Brown. And thank you to all those in his last few months at Regency Retirement Home in Port Hope, Northumberland Hills Hospital and finally Extendicare Peterborough who treated him like “Gold”. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. In keeping with Dad’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a private family burial in Highland Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice. Please join us in honouring Dad with a Celebration of Life at Danny and Laurie Young’s home on Saturday July 27, 2024; 1 – 4 pm Rain or Shine 750 Fife’s Bay Road, Selwyn, ON K9J 6X4
