Dolores Therese Miller Obituary
Dolores Theresa Miller November 9, 1933 – June 11, 2024
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dolores Theresa Miller at the age of 90. Her life’s journey ended peacefully on June 11, 2024, while she was living with her third eldest child, Michelle Miller, in Calgary, Alberta.
Dolores was born to Helen and Daniel Flegel in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on November 9, 1933, and spent most of her early life in Saskatchewan. She had two siblings, Gordon and Carol, and was an avid baseball player, spending many hours running bases and squatting behind home plate as a back catcher.
As a young woman, she trained as a lab technician at Providence Hospital in Moose Jaw. After completing her training, she took her first and only job outside the home in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. While singing in the church choir in Maple Creek, she met Leonard Miller, who had completed a six-month teacher training course at Normal School. Leonard became her life partner and soulmate until his death, and truth be told, until Dolores’s own death. They were married in Moose Jaw on August 21, 1954, and began their married life in Walsh, Alberta, where Len became a teacher in a one-room school. Dolores often assisted in the classroom, and it was there that she became pregnant with their first child. Maureen was born in August of that year in Moose Jaw.
After Maureen’s birth, the couple moved to Calgary, where Len worked as a teacher and eventually a principal, spending ten years attending night school to earn his education degree. In Calgary, their next five children—Kathy, Michelle, Leslie, and Andrea—were born. They spent one year in Edmonton while Len attained his Master’s degree before returning to Calgary. Three years later, during Jason’s birth in Calgary, the family moved to Vulcan. In 1982, they moved to Sherwood Park, and in 1994, after Len retired, they settled in High River. They specifically chose their final house because it sat on a golf course, a shared passion.
Dolores kept busy playing bridge, volunteering with the Catholic Women’s League (CWL), taking adult education courses, and playing as much baseball as she could. She and Len loved hosting parties and get-togethers with their neighbors, with their New Year’s Eve BBQ hamburger parties becoming a beloved tradition.
Strong family ties were very important to Dolores. She was happiest when her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews all gathered at her home. Dolores was a strong woman, fearless in sharing her opinions, and always ready to help anyone in need, evident in her church work, among her friends, and within the community. She will remain unforgettable in our minds because of who she was.
Dolores is survived by her daughters, Maureen Miller (Norm Johnson), Kathy Sukut (Blahne), Michelle Miller, Leslie Flegel (Brian), Andrea Hughes (Andrew), and son Jason (Denise), along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her beloved husband Leonard Gordon Miller, her parents Helen and Daniel Flegel, her sister Carol Hohol, her brother Gordon Flegel, her nephew Brian Hohol, and her grandson Daniel Sukut.
A funeral service for Dolores will be held on Saturday, July 6, 2024, at 11 am at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in High River, Alberta. The service will be followed by a luncheon and an open mic for family and friends to share their thoughts about Dolores and the impact she had on their lives. Everyone is welcome. Her ashes will be interred with her husband Leonard Miller’s after the luncheon in a private ceremony for immediate family only.
