Mile Gagro Obituary
Mile Gagro
Passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at his home in Georgetown. Mile, in his 85th year, beloved husband of Marica for the past 60 years. Loving father of Lucijana (Patrick), Mirjana (Mario) and Ivanka (Stjepan). Beloved Dedo of Daniella, Kristina, Luka, Pavo, Niko, Michael, Angelina, Ella, Teja and Lucija. Dear brother of Ante, Bozo, Nikola and Nada. Mile was predeceased by his sisters Iva, Mara and Milka and by his brothers Ilija and Ivan. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends here in Canada as well as in Croatia and Australia.
Mile met his wife, Marica, through a chance meeting with mutual friends in a mall. From there, their courtship began. They wrote letters to each other and grew their love steadily until they married in 1964. They left their home in Croatia for Australia with their firstborn daughter Lucijana in 1970. There they grew their family and had their second daughter, Mirjana. In 1975, they came to Canada to join Mile’s brothers, Ante and Bozo, and had their third daughter, Ivanka. Their love was what all couples strive to have: beautiful, kind, caring, selfless, playful, forgiving, unconditional, pure, and eternal.
In his life, Mile was a mechanic, a professor of his trade (auto-electrician), an artist, a gardener, a loving father, a devoted husband, a compassionate Dedo, and, most importantly, a child of God. Until he fell ill, he rarely missed weekly mass at the Queen of Peace Croatian Centre. During his illness, he continued his prayers from home. He devoted his life to God and the Church. He raised his children and grandchildren to have the same Faith, and spent his time post-retirement as a gardener and handyman at the Croatian Centre, taking care of the grounds and the machinery.
Mile’s family meant everything to him, especially his grandchildren. He held them and sang Croatian nursery rhymes to them as babies and toddlers. As children, he played dolls and soccer and taught them how to pick grapes, cherries, and green beans. When they grew into adults, he spoke to them about their lives, asking about work, school, and relationships with attention and care. His grandchildren were lucky to have him as their Dedo.
Second only to God and family, Mile loved his garden. To say he had a green thumb would be an understatement. He would spend 12+ hours a day in the spring/summer (often in a full sweatsuit in 30 degree weather) tending his garden and providing fresh fruits and veggies for his friends and family. If he couldn’t be out in his garden, he would be wandering the property, finding something to fix or someone to help. He built sheds, mowed the lawn, trimmed the trees, and fixed cars. Often, his “help” came in the loving and fiercely stubborn form of telling his family why whatever they were doing was wrong and how they should be doing it instead.
Mile was an athlete, especially passionate about tennis and soccer. He was always so excited to cheer on the Croatian national team in the Euro and World Cup. His family looks forward to cheering on the Vatreni in his honour in this year’s Euro Cup.
Together, we shared countless treasured memories that will forever remain a testament to Mile’s legacy of love and laughter. There is so much more we could share about Mile, but his full story would fill several books. For now, we’ll keep his love and the memories of his life and his iconic laugh in our hearts. His family and friends can find great comfort in the fact that he is with God.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and personal support workers from Acclaim Health who cared for him in his final months with compassion and kindness.
Family and friends will be received at the Jones Funeral Home, 11582 Trafalgar Road, Georgetown (905) 877-3631 on Monday, June 17, 2024 from 2 – 4 p.m. and 6 – 9 p.m. Krunica (prayers) will be held in the chapel at 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Queen of Peace Croatian Franciscan Centre, 9118 Winston Churchill Blvd., Norval on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in Mississauga. Reception to follow at the Queen of Peace Reception Hall.
