It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Ella Joyce Johnson. Joyce died in her sleep early on the morning of May 24th, 2024 at the age of 89
Born in 1934, Joyce, one of 5 children, was raised in Kipling, Saskatchewan. After leaving home she joined the military for a short while, married, and became a nurse. Being a military wife involved many location changes including 2 stretches in Germany, with Joyce, as was her way, providing the lion’s share of the effort of packing, unpacking, coordinating and managing all the moves with her typical attention to detail. After her husband retired from the military Joyce and her family settled in Victoria, BC, where she spent many years working at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital. When at home she took pride in tending to her house and property, ensuring everything was neat, tidy, and well manicured. Never one to idle, she kept herself busy gardening, doing volunteer work, and always made time to indulge in her passion for hiking. As a doting pet owner she spent many years with a faithful dog by her side and could be counted on for long walks daily, often joined by friends and family when they were available. Following her husband’s untimely passing Joyce traveled to Europe and many places within Canada and the U.S. to spend time with her children, their families, and her brothers, sisters, and their families. She always had a special place in her heart for Saskatchewan and enjoyed going back to visit family whenever possible. When her children eventually settled closer to home Joyce was a familiar supportive presence at all of her four grandchildren’s school and sporting events from basketball, hockey, and soccer to choral performances and school plays. Whatever her grandchildren were involved in, she would be there to support them. In the last year the arrival of her first great grandchild brought her many joyful smiles. Joyce will be dearly missed by her loving family and the many friends she made over the years. Predeceased by her husband Joe, brother Tom, and sister Anne she will be fondly remembered by her son Guy (Cindy), granddaughter Lauren (Jim), great granddaughter Quinn, granddaughter Ryanne (Roberto), son Lee, grandchildren Joe and Meg, sister Adele, brother Lawrence and her wonderful nieces and and their families.
A special thanks to her family doctor and the palliative care team from Oak Bay Gordon Head Community Health Services as well as the Royal Jubilee Hospital and the Victoria Hospice for the support and comfort they provided Joyce in her time of need.
