TURNER, Robert Allen
October 3, 1936 – May 22, 2024
Robert Allen Turner passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024 at Riverview Heights Retirement Home, with the caring staff of Riverview and Bayshore keeping him comfortable and his caregiver Sue offering loving support.
Loved and missed by his daughter Jane Turner and grandchildren Abaigeal & Arabella Kelso, his brothers Reg and Richard Turner (Pat) and sister Shirley Anne (Joe). Predeceased by his wife Nora (nee Haywood) and his parents Helen (nee Murray) and Ken Turner, sister- in-law Rosemary and brother-in-law Bill.
Born October 3, 1936 in Cardinal ON, Bob boarded a ship bound for Europe after school and began his lifelong journey of exploring. Studying at the University of Guelph and at the University of British Columbia, he had a long career as a high school biology teacher in Bancroft, Manitouwadge and Barry’s Bay. He met Nora in Bancroft and they were married while they were both teaching there. He and Nora shared many travel adventures over the years, they both loved walking in the sugar bush, swimming in the lake, canoeing, cross country skiing, tennis, biking, pretty much anything outdoors. During his time in Eganville he worked the farm hosting different animals at various times; sheep, cattle, chickens, horses. He also put his love of nature to work by many years of planting and tending to an enormous garden, and his treasured apple and pear trees. When their granddaughters came along he was constantly devising schemes for them to explore with him, cutting mazes in the long grass, making wagons to carry them and the turtles or whatever else they found around, tapping trees in the sugar bush – always concocting fun.
He developed the model for the renovations at St. John’s Anglican Church in Eganville to make it accessible as it is today, travelling to Ottawa to present their proposal to the diocese for the renovations. He also devoted his time to the Eganville Rotary Club. There was never a dull moment, and he always had a ‘project’ on the go.
Thank you to everyone who has shared your memories of him, they are all wonderful to hear. He always loved a good story.
Final arrangements entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Eganville. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John’s Anglican Church, Eganville on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 am. Interment will be held at St. Paul’s Anglican Cemetery, Combermere. Tributes and condolences may be made online at www.zohrfuneralhome.com
