Robert, “Bob”, Mitchell, at the age of 91, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 16, 2024 at the West Parry Sound Health Centre. Bob is survived by Iris (Sheedy) his beloved wife of almost 68 years. He was a wonderful father to his four children Karen (John), Bob, Bret (Janice) and Jo-Anne (Pat). He will be missed by his grandchildren Michael (Loren), Robin (Stan), Alex (Loz), Erin, Kassandra, and Kestra. He will also be fondly remembered by his brother Edwin, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his grandson Brody, his brothers Harvey, Roy, his twin, Ken, and his parents Nellie (Varden) and Edward.
Bob was a teacher and principal for 35 years, who began his career in 1952. He was an educator in Dryden, Levack, Nobel, McDougall, Carling, Pointe au Baril, and Parry Sound (Isabella, Victory). He had special qualifications in health and physical education, mathematics, and held a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Education. Bob found it difficult to retire due to his positive relationship with students and staff, but he looked at this as an “opportunity to examine new horizons”. He then volunteered for over 25 years. He was the Chairman of St. Joseph’s Hospital, Vice-Chair of Parry Sound General Hospital, and member of the board for the West Parry Sound Health Centre and Lakeland Long Term Care. He was pivotal in the establishment of the new hospital.
Bob was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, boating, and camping. He was a member of Parry Sound Anglers and Hunters for over 34 years. At the Foley Fall Fair he instructed children about conservation and assisted them in making bird feeders and bat boxes. He took his family of six all over North America, while towing a pop-up camper, with no GPS, and many well-worn paper maps. His basement pays tribute to his many trophies and travels. In retirement, Bob and Iris travelled extensively nationally and internationally. Bob was willing to try his hand at many activities, including gardening, growing plants from seeds, building (fishing hut, barn, fences…) and tinkering with boat and snowmobile motors. Although a hunter, he had a soft spot for all animals including his cats, pony and the birds, deer and other animals that he fed in his yard. Bob was a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays, scheduling his days around game time. Bob enjoyed curling for many decades. He had a real love of reading and could finish a book in an afternoon. He was an intelligent and serious man who also loved a good joke and always had room for a honey cruller, or two.
Bob lived his life by the motto, “see a need, lend a hand”. He will be deeply missed by friends and family but remembered forever.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 7, 2024 from 6 to 8 pm at Torrance Funeral Home, 89 Bowes Street, Parry Sound. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 8, 11 am, at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 52 Church Street, Parry Sound. Reception to follow at the church hall. Donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and West Parry Sound Health Centre Foundation.
