It is with great sadness, but with hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our cherished mother and sweet Granny, Gwendolyn Eloise Beardsall (Greaves) at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on February 12, 2023 at the age of 91.
Daughter of Robert and Ruby Greaves, Gwen spent her childhood on the family farm near Craighurst, ON alongside her two beloved siblings, Shirl and Ron. In 1950, she married James Robert Paul Beardsall, and the two were inseparable for the next 68 years until Paul’s death in 2018.
Together, Gwen and Paul raised four children; Sharon Stenton (John O’Donnell) Steve (Jan), Geri Haskell (Todd) and the late Scott (1984). As a Mom, Gwen was the strength and backbone of her family. Gwen’s unending support and love for all her children was second to none. Imagine, in 1967, taking a family of six on a road trip across America in a two door Oldsmobile hardtop?! She was simply the best.
As a grandmother to her eight loving grandchildren, Gwen was incomparable. Granny is forever adored and admired by her grandkids: Jason Beardsall, Zach Stenton (Rebecca), Derek Stenton (Rachel), Sean Beardsall (Maartje), Kate Stenton (Ryan), Jenna Haskell (Wade), Nick Stenton (Diane) and Tara Haskell (Joe).
She will also be missed by her sixteen great-grandchildren, two of which carry her name; a hint at the indelible impact she will always have on her family.
Gwen and Paul owned and operated The Sound Shop, a downtown Chatham fixture for more than 25 years, until their retirement in 1984. She did her best since his passing, but Gwen missed her husband. They are now reunited in love, enjoying a good laugh together like old times, probably while listening to some Sinatra over happy hour.
It’s hard to put into words the extraordinary person that she was, but Gwen was truly beautiful, inside and out. Gwen’s life was always centred around loving and caring for her family and her many long time friends. We could not have been luckier to have had her as ours. Her incredibly kind and generous nature, warm and welcoming presence and of course her delicious cooking and recipes will be missed beyond measure.
As per Gwen’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation in memory of Gwen to Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation, where she was so fortunate to spend her final days.
