Sister Madeleine Geiger died peacefully at Providence Centre, Edmonton, Alberta on May 24, 2024, at the age of 95. Born in Thal, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Adolf Geiger and Marie (nee Moser). She entered the Sisters of Charity of Halifax in 1953 and made her first profession of vows on April 1, 1956.
Sister Madeleine attended Mount Saint Vincent University where she received a B.Sc in Secretarial Studies in 1968. Sister was active in her ministry for over 50 years which began in education, teaching in Dartmouth and Stellarton, NS. In 1958, she returned to Halifax and worked in various departments of the Congregational Administration offices. She faithfully returned to her family farm in Tawatinaw, AB to care for her aging parents in 1980. In 1983 she resumed her ministry and worked in various departments for the Archdiocese of Edmonton.
Sister Madeleine was a woman of deep faith who lived a life of caring for others. Her experience of growing up on a farm instilled a devoted relationship with nature and she found great joy in watching a plant come to bloom, hear the sounds of nature and birds singing, and of course, the big, beautiful Prairie skies of Alberta! She was known for her storytelling that always brought a chuckle, her keen sense of humour and for sharing her mother’s wisdom. Sister Madeleine gave joyful witness to love through her quiet, gentle presence in every opportunity that presented itself, whether it was by a touch, a kind word or a smile. Indeed, a faithful Sister of Charity!
In addition to her parents, Sister Madeleine is predeceased by her brother Leonard. She is survived by her brother Albert and many devoted nieces and nephews.
All services will be held at the chapel at Providence Centre, 3005-119 Street NW, Edmonton, Alberta. A prayer service to welcome Sister Madeleine’s body home will be held at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2024. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 29 at 9:00 am followed by burial in St. Joachim’s Cemetery, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sisters of Charity, 215 Seton Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3M 0C9.
