83, of Boutilier’s Point, passed away on May 15, 2024 at Windsor Elms in Falmouth . Mom was born on Christmas Day in 1940. She was the first of four children born to Ethel and Harold Kennedy. She was raised in Boutilier’s Point together with siblings, Faye, David and Blaine. An avid student , cook , crafter , she had as she would say , a wonderful upbringing . After vocational school, she ventured to work in Edmonton. After returning home to Nova Scotia a few years later, she married Dad, Peter Christie, and together they had myself, Leanne and my sister Sara. In 1979 , We lost Sara tragically, and life and mom were never quite the same. Mom continued in the field of secretary and office work. She had many happy years at the Danish house, Daley Black and Moreira law firm, two different times with Dad at the Red and White, Colonial Homes and finally her final near decade at the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia. She and dad visited me in Alberta many times and the two of them did extensive travelling further west and in northern Canada. Mom loved our country and traversed it multiple times by car and by train from coast to coast and even to Tuktoyatuk , North West Territories .
Shortly after retirement, the grand plan to travel in the motorhome with Dad , was not to be so, when he passed away at 63 years of age after a brief illness.
Mom threw herself into her church , genealogy, volunteer work and her visiting/traveling. Whether it was with the St Margaret’s Bay Food bank, the gardening clubs or making food for a church gathering, mom was always willing to lend a hand. She enjoyed helping others and participating in community ventures for the greater good.
There was no place on earth more important to her than her church, St. James Anglican, the yellow church in Boutilier’s Point. Mom sat on the executive of the Anglican church women’s auxiliary (ACW) group for all of her adult years. She worked with the Pioneer cemetery and was a big part of the successful restoration .
She spent some time traveling, a true passion. She visited Montebeliard in France , and traced her ancestors steps through Switzerland and Germany. She maintained her beautiful property and gardens on her own for most of the last 20 years. Her passion for genealogy gave her many years of enjoyment at this time . She regularly had her work acknowledged and added to research at the Nova Scotia Archives in Halifax.
She is survived by one grandson, her light, Joseph Peter Hermanson, and daughter Leanne, one brother David (Peggy), in laws Judy and David McCaughey, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews .
The family would like to send a heartfelt, thank you to the staff of Fairview Terrace at the Windsor Elms. Also to Louise Christie for your unending love for Mom and friendship. You are an angel on this earth.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, May 24 at 11 AM at Saint James Anglican Church in Boutiliers Point. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to St. James Memorial Fund or Charity of choice. Condolences can be made at www.rawalker.ca
