James McGee Nugent Obituary
James McGee Nugent M.D. 1935-2024
The family of the late Dr. Thomas and Mary Patricia Nugent of
Bath, N.B. sadly announce the passing of Dr. Jim, second oldest of the thirteen Nugent siblings. Jimmy was the much-loved and favoured son, especially by his mother Patsy.
James M. Nugent left Bath Public School after Grade Nine to attend the College Preparatory School at Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The Priests there managed to tame Jimmy’s wild side and got him to successfully complete the program. Then he went on to earn a Bachelors of Science Degree from St.F.X. University. In those four years he spent several summers enrolled in the R.O.T.C. Programme,( Rank 2nd Lieutenant), where he loved doing military maneuvres, driving tanks, and firing large guns. After St. F. X.Graduation, he spent a year working in the Arctic on the D.E.W. Line, as a Crawley and McCracken employee of his Montreal uncle, Ken Cullen.
While Jim worked Up North, he sent all of his pay checks back to our mother in Bath, NB, for safe-keeping. He had a very lucrative after-hours pastime of playing Bridge, always for money. He told us they used to play for a penny a point, but as the year went on, in Arctic isolation, the stakes went up, at the end, they often played for a dollar a point.
Many didn’t believe the stories that came in his weekly pay check letters to Mum, but after he was done, he arrived back in Bath driving a new Austin Healy sports car, on his way to Medical School at Dalhousie University.
.
Jimmy did well at “ Dal. Med. “ loved his courses and Doctor/Professors, as well as his best buddies, his Phi Rho Beta Fraternity mates. Upon Graduation as a Doctor in 1964, he interned in Halifax, NS, in his final year there he was the Chief Resident of the hospital.
.
He then headed to California, where he would practise Medicine for over fifty years. He did the “ Fast-track “ route to his Surgical Residency in San Francisco, which was a major accomplishment to be accepted directly into a Surgical Residency without having practised Medicine on his own. He then moved to the Los Angeles / Orange County area where he was a General Surgeon for many years. In later years he had a Family Medicine Practice and had a Clinic in Laguna Beach. He lived in Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, etc.
Although very passionate about his patients and the ongoing study of Medicine, Jim was also passionate about Life. He loved his large family from NB.
Dr. Jim had a passion for Speed, whether on the track or in the air. He thought nothing of flying his airplane to take son Jan skiing in Western USA states. He also went on several trips to ski in Europe, and attended many International Formula One races. Jim especially loved Cars, and Racing; he was an avid fan of Formula One, and even raced his own Formula Two, open-wheel race car. It was painted bright red and had a large white Maple Leaf painted on top, as did his red helmet.
Jim loved family gatherings at Pat-Tom Lodge, the family cottage at East Grand Lake in Fosterville, NB. Whenever he came, he always stopped in Down East Maine to buy lobsters and all the fixins for a family “Lobstah Feed. “
Jim loved listening to the family musicians playing his favourite Folk and Country songs. Jimmy literally couldn’t carry a tune in a basket, but was often heard singing his favourite song, “ Blame it on the Bossa Nova”, which he did quite well.
After 50 plus years of practising Medicine in California, Dr. Jim moved back East , retiring to Apex, North Carolina.
Recently, He suffered from Dementia, and when he could no longer live on his own in North Carolina, he moved into Memory Care in Kingston Ontario. Even though his memory was going, he still remembered all the words to his favourite Irish Classics and sang them daily, in nearly-perfect tune. Galway Bay, O’Danny Boy, Tora, Lora, Lora, etc. ,
He passed away in Kingston, ON on May 17th, 2024.
Dr. James Nugent leaves in this world, his son Jan-Christopher Nugent, San Diego, California, grandchildren Avery-Claire Nugent, New York City, and Shea Christopher Nugent, San Diego. Also, his siblings,, Margaret Ann Flaherty, Windham, Me. USA, Patricia Norris, Ottawa, ON, Tommie (Fred) Ryan, Toronto, ON, Mary McMenamin, Kingston, ON, Robert (Deannie) Nugent, Ottawa, ON, Angela Nugent, Mississauga, ON, Prof. Paul Nugent, Hartland NB, Bridget (Tom) Brennan, Piggott Lake, NS, William (Marg) Nugent, East Grand Lake, NB.
