Margaret Eleanor McDevitt (nee Lyness)
It is with profound sadness that we share the news of her passing on Sunday, May 12th, 2024. Peacefully and surrounded by the love of her husband James, daughters Julie and Diane, and granddaughter Amanda.
Fondly known by most as “Eleanor”. She leaves behind her loving husband James (Jimmy) and her children Brian (Virginia), Michael (Claudia), Julie (Steve) and Diane (Steve). As well as her nine grandchildren, James, Amanda, Matthew, Lauren, Megan, Brandon, Lacey, Owen and Tristan. Forever in the hearts of her brothers John (Jan) Lyness and Alvin (Jenny) Lyness. Predeceased by her parents Harry and Edith Lyness.
Eleanor was born in Toronto, Ontario on February 16th, 1948. She grew up on the family farm in Adjala township, with her two younger brothers Alvin and John. She married her first husband (the late Keith Porter) and they raised their 4 children on a severed lot of that same farmland.
Eleanor was fortunate enough to meet and marry her second husband, James McDevitt. They shared over 20 years of happiness together. Her passing has left a void that will be difficult to fill.
She was an avid knitter and could usually be found at her local knitting groups, which also provided a great source of socialization for her. She was a very proud Grandma that took great joy in watching her grandkids grow up.
Warmest thanks are extended to Matthews House Hospice, St. Elizabeth’s health care, everyone on the Palliative care team including Liz Ferrier, and Dr. Greta Ra, for all of their support, kindness, caring, and compassion. As well as everyone else involved for the visits, flowers, food and words of support. Eleanor truly appreciated each and every one of you.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Matthews House Hospice would be greatly appreciated.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion #171 111 Dufferin St. S., Alliston on Sunday, July 21 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
