Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our amazing Moma, Theresa Caines on May 13, 2024. Formerly of Bird Cove, NL, she was born to Katherine and Michael Kennedy and enjoyed a happy childhood with many loving siblings and friends. Her family shared a love of music and that love was evident throughout her life. She met her lifetime soulmate, our Dad, Clyde Micheal Caines and married March 25, 1951, and made a home in Bartlett’s Harbour, NL.
They developed a powerful love and shared that love with nine children. Although times were tough, as children we remember the hard work of our parents; Moma never sitting at meal time—she would say “there’s just no time’, or Moma staying up all hours to sew our clothes and make Christmas as perfect as she could; teaching us to respect all and one of our most powerful memories would have to be the love Moma had for education—She constantly drilled into our heads the importance of education and living better lives as a result. To say she was proud of her children and grandchildren would be an understatement. Her grandchildren seemed to gravitate to her so naturally and powerfully that we often would watch in awe and wonder.
Many in her community were loved by Moma, as was evident in the many pairs of socks or mitts she would knit and give to others; sometimes, people we never knew, but she had a love of giving so powerful it didn’t matter, if someone was in need, Moma wanted to help in any way she could. Moma’s love of music developed into a music CD with the sole intentions of giving all proceeds to the NL Alzheimer’s Society. Moma had a best friend, Edmund Gould, and shared many phone calls in which Edmund would express his love and concern for his wife who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Moma wanted to donate to Alzheimer’s research because of that special bond she shared with her best friend. She would walk door to door and sold many CDs resulting in a donation of $10,000,00. She may have been proud of her family, but we sure are proud to call her our Moma.
If you ask us what stands out in our Moma’s personality, we have to agree that her quick wit and love of laughter would have to be front and center. Many hours were spent laughing so hard, and the wit would get even more pronounced. The laughter got louder and often ended in happy tears.
If there ever was a stronger love than that of her family, it would have to be her love of God. She was a devout Catholic and despite her 92 years, she was progressive in her beliefs. She loved and included all; and adapted to the teachings of the church and her upbringing.
Visitation will take place at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Bartlett’s Harbour on Wednesday, May 15th,2024 from the hours of 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm. A Rosary service for the public will be held on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024 at 7 pm and a family service will be held on Wednesday, May 15th,2024 at 7 pm. The funeral service is also taking place at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, May 16th, 2024 at 2 pm with Father Amar officiating. Interment will follow at the family plot in the Roman Catholic Church in Bartlett’s Harbour.
