It is with immense sorrow that we announce the passing of Joseph Bernard Fougère (Bernie) which occurred at the Strait Richmond Hospital on May 11, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born in Poulamon, Bernie was the son of the late Alzear and Alice (Boudreau) Fougère of Boudreauville, on Isle Madame, Richmond County.
Bernie worked at the fish plant in Boudreauville, where he met his loving and caring wife of 67 years, Rose Marie (George). Together, they had four children – Brian, Lorelei, Roger, and Sherry. They survived the tragic death of their son Roger at the young age of 22. Despite life’s challenges, Marie and Bernie persevered and unwaveringly stood by each other. The family moved to Whiteside after he became employed as a lab technician at the Pulp Mill in Point Tupper until his retirement.
Upon retirement, Bernie and Marie traveled around the coast in their RV, with many washer toss and card tournament wins under their belts. Bernie was the happiest when he was dancing, especially to his favorites like Hank Williams, or with his wife to ‘Last Date’ by Floyd Cramer. Bernie was known as a ‘kind man of few words’ whose favourite past time was watching sports on TV, mostly hockey and baseball, and over the years became a dedicated Blue Jays and Maple Leafs fan. He endured much pain in his last years but never complained. Family meant a lot to him and he enjoyed having his family around him.
Bernie is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Rose Marie (George), sister, Brenda White (Francis), sister-in-law, Celine Fougère, step sister-in-law, Joann George, and his children: Brian (Nancy), Lorelei (Jim Nicoll) and Sherry (Mark Marchand). Grandchildren: Sharon, Lee, Matthew, Ben, Kenzie, Cody, Elizabeth, and Dylan. Great-grandchildren: Emerson, Isla, Susannah, Tessa, Rosa, Vinny, Marigold, Edith and step great-grandson, Layton. And nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Bernie was predeceased by brother, Alfred Fougère, son, Roger, and brother-in law, Rick George.
The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Bernie especially Dr. Steven DeRoche at Strait Richmond Hospital for his compassion during Bernie’s final journey.
