On May 3, 2024, Donna Margaret Moar peacefully passed away at Selkirk Regional Hospital, at the age of 80 years. Donna is survived by her husband Gordon, children Wanda (Brooks) Allen, Carla (Wayne) Murray, and Clint (Karen) Moar, and granddaughters Mya & Hana Moar and Josslyn Murray.
Donna was born in Grandview, MB on August 23, 1943. She is predeceased by and reunites with her parents Allie and Ellen Evans, and brother Orville Evans.
In her mid teens, Donna moved away from the farm in Grandview to Dauphin, to attend Business College. After completing, she moved to the big city of Winnipeg, where she met and married Gordon. Mom was an extremely hard worker and passed that on to her family. We remember her telling us stories of early days and jobs at Westmacott’s Paint and Glass, Canada Packers and Eaton’s Mail Order Desk. When she became a devoted full time mom of 3 she worked even harder, often as a single mom while Gordon was away from home working for CNR. Mom did it all… In addition to running kids to tap dancing, softball or soccer, she also was the neighborhood Avon lady (back in the day where you did door to door sales); made and sold her crafts, and was caretaker of an apartment building. She also worked at Buns Master Bakery where she met her life-long “Goldeyes partner” Arlene. Donna then became her own boss when she worked at her home cleaning business. Mom loved to spend time at the casino with Arlene and her girls, she especially loved ‘Woo Woo’, the annual family casino weekend at South Beach casino. Many laughs were had, even if she went home with a bit less cash.
Mom was a skilled crafter. Many people sought out her crochet work and later jewellery. Many of us received her especially handmade greeting cards for birthdays and other special occasions. She was an avid Winnipeg Goldeyes and curling fan. Many events were planned around games to not interfere with the schedule. If she wasn’t traveling to games, you could always hear it on the TV in the background when you called her. If you asked her who was winning… you got a long rundown of the baseball game (or curling match) in full.
Mom and dad loved to travel all over Canada and the US. Mom would keep journals of their trips, which are fun to reminisce over and sparked many memories. Mom and dad retired and moved to Grandview, where they enjoyed their time there for several years. Eventually moving back to Winnipeg (which we think was to be closer to the girls). Her granddaughters brought her the greatest joy. Travelling to Edmonton as often as they could in summer or at Christmas to be with Mya and Hana. And she loved every sleepover Josslyn had at grandma and papa’s place where they made greeting cards together.
In her later years, mom always said she “wanted to make it to 60 years of marriage and to be 80 years old”. We happily celebrated both of those last summer. She always finished what she set out to do. Always remembered and never to forget her as a loving wife, mother and grandma.
A Celebration of Life is planned for Wednesday, July 17 at 1:30 p.m. at Sturgeon Heights Community Centre, 210 Rita Street, Winnipeg, MB.
