It is with great sadness that the family of Irene Nodding, age 90, of First Peninsula, announce her passing on Thursday, May 9, 2024 at home with her husband and family by her side.
Born in Lunenburg, she was the youngest daughter of the late Kenneth and Ellen (White) Tanner. Irene is survived by her husband Gordon Jr.; her children, Gail Mosher (Glenn) of Blockhouse, David Nodding (Carla) of Chester Basin, Patricia Nodding (Peter), Ellen Nodding both of Lunenburg; grandchildren, Lori (Jamie), Terran, Rebecca, Mark (Candace), Katie (John), Shanna (Stephen), Jenna, Stephanie (Nigel), Matthew, Chelsea (Justin), Beth Ann (Kal); great-grandchildren, Justin, Thatcher, Nathan, Hannah, Ella, Emmerson, Ella, Joscelyn, Tenley, Jade, Lyla, Myles, Emilee, Rita, Kaeya; as well as several nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Irene was predeceased by her son Kenneth; sisters, Bertha Beck, Kay Smith, Barbara Duval and daughter-in-law Wanda.
Irene worked from her home her entire life and referred to herself as a Domestic Engineer. Family, home and community meant the world to her, and once married she focused her attention on raising her five children, fostering over forty children, many daytime children, and her grandchildren who often visited during school breaks and holidays. She said she often slept better or best when there was a baby in the house. Rennie, Mommy, Mom, Grumma, Great Grumma, Aunt Irene were just a few of the names being heard when in her presence. The door to her home was always open for drop in visits, and phone calls a plenty when anyone needed help or a listening ear. She was faithful to the Presbyterian Church not missing a Sunday, nor a Christmas eve service in her younger years. The holidays filled her spirit, transforming the house with her large collection of angels, little villages and the fattest of Christmas trees. She had no problem to feed at least fifty or more over any given holiday. She was famous for her pound cakes, baked for birthdays and anniversaries. In her late years the count was well over sixty cakes being made a year.
Memory was on her side to remember all these monumental occasions, however she did often refer to her hand-written address book as her family continued to grow. An assortment of pies, desserts and of course her summertime squares were either always on hand or prepared to go out the door to either bake sales, family celebrations, or just because she was thinking of you. Her measures where one that only she mastered, as no one can get any of her recipes quite right! If you didn’t find her in the kitchen baking or cooking, you would find her enjoying coffee or tea with one of the many guests that stopped by daily to visit. The door was always open to anyone who wanted to say hello, or who was in need. There was always an extra place at the table and a pantry full of food. Evenings you could find her watching games shows with “dad” while knitting one of the MANY pairs of socks her busy hands would create. Afgans, sweaters, and little baby sets were added into the mix. Tuesdays she would attend Tops and then go for snacks afterwards, Wednesday were set aside for radio Bingo. While she didn’t have her licence, she had a love for shopping and being out around town. Dad was often found in the car while she was inside the grocery store, not necessary shopping, but chatting with everyone she knew! Sunday afternoon drives were common attending hall suppers and visiting her children and grandchildren. She was a Tupperware queen, with parties being held and cupboards stocked high. Her spoon collection grew and grew over the years as everyone thought of her during their travels. Daily walks were had with her dear friends Rita and Evelyn, always a group of children following. Yellow was her favourite colour and she was surrounded by it both inside and outside her home. Dad often worn the colour just so she could see it even more. Her kindness, strength and resilience were constants throughout her life.
How blessed we were all to have her as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. It’s your turn to fly high with your angels. You will be missed, but your presence will be with us each time we indulge in anything peanut butter related. Toodaloo!
Many thanks to all the ladies who helped with Irene’s in-home care, Emmie, Toni, Brenda, Lori, Kayla, Jenifer, Carylon, Melanie, Jolene; VON and the Palliative Care team.
