Millie Culbertson Obituary
Mrs. Millie Culbertson, formerly of the Nottingham district, passed away peacefully at Hillview Manor, Estevan, SK. on Wednesday, May 8, 2024 at the age of 97.
Emilda (Millie) Culbertson was born on April 19, 1927. She was the fourth child of Oscar and Alice (Gervais) Mailhiot and was born in the Alida area during a spring blizzard so she was delivered by her father. She grew up in the Cantal/Alida area, left home in her early teens, and went to work as a “hired girl” for local families.
She married Gordon Culbertson in 1944, and from that union a family of three survived: Linda, Colleen and James. Heartbreak and hard times were no stranger to Millie as two of her babies died in infancy. Husband Gordon died in 1996, and daughter Colleen was taken in 1999. Millie was a hard worker and did whatever farm work had to be done. She grew a large garden and preserved for winter use. She milked hundreds of cows in her lifetime, separated milk and shipped cream! Many children came into her care when family situations arose that required extra hands. She had a knack for helping folks who needed help with filling out forms and doing business, and she did so for many family members.
She always felt a duty to her family and kept close tabs on her brothers and sisters. She took particular interest and satisfaction in seeing James’ farm operations and could often be found “mechanicking” when machines were being repaired in the yard.
She and good friends frequented the bingo halls in the area for many years, and that love of bingo carried on until recently. After moving off the farm into town, coffee mornings with friends were regular outings.
When her health failed, she moved to Estevan Regional Nursing Home in Dec. 2015 where a severe fall ended her walking. She then moved to Hillview Manor in Dec. 2018 until her passing on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
She was predeceased by her parents Oscar and Alice Mailhiot; husband Gordon; daughters Lois Elaine, Lois Ethel and Colleen; her siblings: Lucien, Alcide, Florence, Albert, Lucina, Adrian, Mary Rose, Evelyn, Andre, Lionel and Victor; and sons-in-law Armand Smith, Raymond Gross and Edmond Donais.
She is survived by sister Matilda Winzinowich of Winnipeg; daughter, Linda Donais; granddaughter Georgie (Alan Shisko), Emory and Sophia, grandson Edmond (Nancy Graham), grandson Devin (Kelly Panasiuk) Ashley, Paige (son Cassius), Danielle and Arianna. Also surviving are daughter Colleen’s children, granddaughter Bonnie (Brian Ramsey) Wyatt, granddaughter Debbie (Rob Haygarth), Cathleen (daughter Evangeline) Shelby, and Jessica (fiance William Croll) and grandson Darren Gross (Curesha Moodley). Also surviving Millie is son James (Adeline Henrion), grandson Kyle (Brooklyn Hess), grandson Tyler (Amber Caldwell) Jami, Ryker and Barrett and grandson Caleb (Morgan Robertson) and granddaughter Kati (Logan Bridgeman).
Funeral Vigil Prayers for Millie were said at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church, Redvers, SK. on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 12, 2024 at 7:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church on Monday, May 13, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Father Ronald Andree as Celebrant. The interment followed at the Redvers Cemetery.
