James ‘Jim’ Charles McGown passed away at the West Parry Sound Health Centre, on Saturday, May 4th, 2024. Age 90 years.
Jim was the son of John and Elzina McGown, and youngest brother to Harriet (Jack) Campbell and Jack Robert (Beryl) McGown. He and his late wife, Maureen McGown, stood together through good and hard times, even in death. They are together again after only a short time apart.
Jim was the cherished father of Marjorie (George) Moniz and Carrie (Jon) Nolan. He was a man of few words, yet his kindness and dedication to his family spoke volumes. Of his quiet demeanor, he would say that still waters ran deep. He had a quick wit and a deep love for the outdoors, particularly the Parry Sound area, where his roots ran deep.
Throughout his life, Jim found joy in building and creating. From the two family homes he built to carving wood and making pine needle baskets, his craftsmanship was evident in everything he touched. He also had a knack for playing pool, often emerging victorious with a smile on his face.
Jim’s professional journey led him to Shaw Almex, where he dedicated over 35 years to customer service and product costing, including moving to Atlanta in the mid-eighties to help establish their operations there. His early years, however, were filled with diverse work experiences, including guiding canoe trips in Algonquin, commercial fishing, painting the trestle bridge, cutting grass at CIL, and painting lighthouses, including the iconic Red Rock Lighthouse.
He was a beloved grandfather to Amanda (Mark) Di Teodore and Eric (Samantha) Moniz, a great-grandfather to Riley (Cassie) Moniz, Mason Di Teodore, Chace Di Teodore, and Addison Moniz, and a great-great-grandfather to Olivia and Savannah Moniz. He will be deeply missed by his nephews, nieces, especially those from McGown Lake, and his lifelong carpool friends from Shaws.
Jim leaves behind a profound legacy of abiding love and unwavering strength that will continue to inspire all who knew him. His quiet resilience and steadfast dedication to his family serve as a beacon of light, guiding us through our grief and reminding us of the enduring impact of his presence in our lives.
As was Jim’s wish, cremation has taken place.
Private family graveside service and interment at Foley Memorial cemetery.
