Kawai, Alice (nee Kuwabara)
Peacefully passed away at St. Joseph Villa on April 22, 2024 at the age of 97. Born in Victoria, B.C. on January 23, 1927. She is predeceased by her husband, Frank Shigeru of 65 years and her son William Glenn (1956). Lovingly remembered by Rick (Liz), Michael (Brenda), Elaine (Ian) Walker and Russ (Sharon). Seven grandchildren: Glenn (Sarah), Adam (Nicole), Grant, Carleen (Mike), Stuart (Michelle), Sarah (Curtis), Lauren (Adam). she was also the proud great-grandmother of 9 great-grandchildren. Born and educated in Victoria, she and her family were relocated to the interior of B.C. due to WWII, where she and 22,000 other evacuees demonstrated strength of will and character during internment. After the war, Alice relocated to Hamilton where she met her husband to be. Alice became a wife and mother before returning to work as a legal secretary. She was involved in various social and fund-raising activities in the Japanese Canadian community. She was a wonderful mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend who treated everyone with love and respect. Alice was always involved with her family and was always there to provide whatever support was needed. In 2013, she left her west mountain home for the loving care at St. Joseph’s Villa where she comfortably spent the rest of her days. Despite the many challenges in her life, Alice was more than a survivor – she flourished. A special thanks to the caring staff at St. Joseph’s Villa, Lilac Garden Wing. Cremation has already taken place but a celebration of life will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Joseph’s Villa Foundation or the Japanese Canadian Cultural Association would be greatly appreciated by the family.
