Passed away peacefully and welcomed by God’s loving arms on April 29, 2024, at 88 years of age. Dear husband of Ruth with whom he celebrated 62 years of marriage. Loving and devoted father of Jacqueline Banwell (Richard), Terry Schinkel (Tracey), and Greg Schinkel (Andrea). He will be sadly missed by Harvey Van Huizen.
Treasured Opa of Ryan Van Huizen (Lynetta), Lauren De Haan (Brian), Alexandra Higgins (Matt), Hayley Van Huizen, Gabriella, Garrett, Sterling, and Christian Schinkel. Great Opa of Lydia, Harvey, Heidi, Jack and David. Dear brother of Johanna Vaandering (John), late Tinie Koolwyk (late John), late Bill Schinkel (Corrie), Corrie Lammers (John), late Joe Schinkel, Herman Schinkel (Vena/late Tina), Ben Schinkel (Winnie), Liz Schinkel (Lieve), and late Willie Hiemstra (Ollie). Brother-in-law of late Margaret Eshuis (Henry), Emmy Wassenaar (late Andy), late Tina Wassenaar (Siek), and Lawrence Moraal (late Linda). Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Gerry and Ruth have truly made Es home, having lived in the Town for over 71 years. They opened Schinkels’ Meat Market in 1962. The business continues under the care of their son Greg and his family. Gerry was a long-time member of the Es Christian Reformed Church since 1952. He served on Es Town Council for 13 years, 1980-1985 as Mayor. One of Gerry’s accomplishments in Es was putting in the sanitary Sewer during his term.
Visiting Saturday 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. On Sunday, family and friends are invited to gather at Es Christian Reformed Church in Es after 1 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m. Cremation to follow. Donations may be made to the Es Christian Reformed Church or to Maranatha Christian Academy.
