The family of Gordon Alfred Koppang are sad to announce his passing on the evening of April 4, 2024, at Whistle Bend Place extended care facility. He was 84 years old. Gordon was born to Rose and Art Koppang in Elk Point, Alberta.
Gordon and Marlene met in 1968 in White Rock, British Columbia and made a life together moving place to place, finally making Whitehorse in 1974 their home, along with Rick, Curt, and Deneen. Gordon owned two Mack trucks, “Mean Mother” and “Grandpa K-Nine”. Gordon hauled everything but hanging meat! He had a great sense of humour, was a hard worker, and helped people wherever he could. A Toronto Globe and Mail reporter did a write up on him when Gordon gave him a ride from Eagle Plains to Whitehorse. The headline “Yukon Road Warrior” was on the front page of the Business Section.
Marlene enjoyed travelling when she could on trips with Gordon. He worked in B.C, Alberta, Saskatchewan, N.W.T, Yukon, and Alaska. Gordon always had his camera in hand, and Marlene can attest to the many pictures he had taken. The ‘mancave’ as Gordon called it, was always open for business. He enjoyed the company of others and always had a good story to tell.
Gordon leaves behind his loving wife Marlene, of 55 years, her children Rick (Patty), Curt (Donna), Deneen (Robert), and Arla (J.J.); grandchildren Mia, Rachele, Courtney, Dustin, Lucia, Brandi, Darren, and Christien; great-grandchildren Isabella, Ava, Maggie, Parker, Levi, December, and Harmony; sibling half-sister Blanche Laurence; and daughter Frances Lind (Glen). Gordon will also be missed by his many friends and family of the trucking business.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Whistle Bend Place and to his doctors and nurses, who cared for Gordon, the last 17 months. Also thank you to Heritage North Funeral Home.
At Gordon’s request there will be no service, but a private gathering will be held in July of 2024.
