Ruth Giesbrecht
March 30, 1932 – April 2, 2024
Peacefully, with family by her side, Ruth passed away on Tuesday, April 2nd, 2024, at the age of 92 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Audrey Giesbrecht-Seddon (Brian) and Debbie Lawler (Rick), brother Ben Thiessen (Glenda) and sister Martha Brown. She leaves four grandchildren: Kate Herring (Taggart), James Lawler, Megan Seddon (Steve Marion) and Breanna Seddon (Kyle Hirsch), and two great-grandsons, Jackson Herring and Rowen Marion.
She was predeceased by her husband Edward Giesbrecht, sister Helen Dumas, and parents Mary and Peter Thiessen.
Ruth grew up in the Arden area, and the family moved to Asuncion, Paraguay for a number of years. She returned to Canada in her later teens and worked as a nurse’s aide at the Winnipeg General Hospital and later with Transit foodservices. After her marriage, she was a homemaker and provided childcare. She loved children, and they seemed to naturally gravitate to her. Her focus was always on her children and grandchildren.
She was a hard worker. She loved her garden and her flowers. The annual trip to Vanderveen’s for bedding plants with her sister Martha was a highlight of the year! She was a strong and fiercely independent person. Learning to drive after age 60 gave her an enormous sense of freedom, as she was able to go wherever she wanted, whenever she wanted without having to rely on anyone else.
After dad passed, she joined the Fort Garry Lanes ladies bowling team which opened a whole world of friendships. As her health deteriorated, she enjoyed attending the Riverview Day Club. She moved to the Rosewood supportive housing after a stroke in 2022, and to the Simkin Centre in 2023.
Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sheldon Permack, neighbour Deb Bomek, and the wonderful staff of Weinberg 3 at the Simkin Centre – especially Cheryl, Jayne, Stacey, Rin, and Cathy.
The family will hold a private burial in Carman, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Mennonite Central Committee.
