It is with deep sadness that the family of Verna (Veronika) Margaret Brown (nee Engel) announces her passing at the age of 86 at Summit Heights Retirement Residence. Born in Lemberg Saskatchewan, the daughter of the late Adam and Elizabeth (Elsie) Engel. Beloved wife of 61 years to Douglas Brown (predeceased). Loving mother of Andy (Kathy), Kevin (Sarah), Brian (Kathleen), and Darren (Kim). Proud grandmother of Spencer (Tara), Helen (David), Laura, Shauna, Patrick (Paige), Bridget, Jonathan, Noah, Braeden, and Ryleigh. Dear sister of Edward (Edda), Sydney (Joanne), Gary (Bernadette) and Eric (Kathy).
Verna fondly remembered her first fourteen years growing up in Lemberg Saskatchewan and moved to Hamilton, Ontario in 1952 where she graduated from St. Eugene’s elementary and Cathedral Girls High School. Verna started her teaching career in 1956 at St. Eugene’s elementary school teaching a grade three class of 48 students. She met her husband-to-be Doug at a dance at St. Eugene’s school and they were married three years later at St. Eugene’s church in 1961. After raising her four sons, Verna went to McMaster University and obtained a B.A. in 1988 and returned to teaching until she retired to her favourite jobs of being a grandmother and gardener.
Verna was a member of St. Catherine of Sienna Church (formerly Our Lady of Lourdes) and member of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Hamilton.
Visitation will take place at Bay Gardens Funeral home at 947 Rymal Road E, Hamilton on Tuesday April 2 from 5 to 8 PM. The funeral will be held in the chapel at the funeral home on Wednesday April 3 at 11 AM followed by procession to Holy Sepulchre cemetery for burial and luncheon from 1 to 3 PM at Bay Gardens funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent De Paul, Hamilton. Condolences can be left at www.BayGardens.ca.
