With heavy hearts, the family of Gertrude Christina Weber of Walkerton announce her passing, at South Bruce Grey Health Centre, Walkerton, on Monday, March 25, 2024, in her 90th year.
Gertrude was the beloved mother of Karen (Bruce Ruttan) Moore of Gowanstown, Brenda (Stuart Maxwell) of Grand Prairie, Alb., and Brian (Kelly Sutton) of Walkerton. She cherished her grandchildren: Melissa, Stacey (Colin), Mahasin, Ibraheim, Annelise, and great-grandchildren Maleah, Everly, Aydin, and Benson. She will also be fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law Doris Pletsch of Walkerton, Madaline Weber of Neustadt, and Phyllis Haack of Kitchener.
She was predeceased by her husband Eldon “Eldie”, son Kevin (Terri Sachs), brother Elmer (Martha) Hill, parents William and Lillian Hill, and siblings-in-law Lloyd Pletsch, Gordon Weber, Gerry Haack, Leslie (Dorothy) Weber, Donald Weber, and Wilma (Austin) Schumacher.
Gertrude, fondly known as Gertie, met Eldon a young farmers’ dance, and later married in 1954. They resided in an apartment above the Walkerton movie theater, before constructing their family home on Park Street. Gertie began playing pipe organ in area church services, weddings, and funerals at the age of 12. She embarked on her musical teaching journey at the age of 16, Additionally, she worked as a candy striper at Walkerton Hospital while pursuing nursing. Eldon started his electrical contracting business from their home, and Gertie dedicated herself to raising their four children, managing the electrical business’s bookkeeping, while running her own full-time business.
Passionate about music, Gertrude pursued extensive education and certification. She graduated with Associate A.R.C.T. Piano Performer and Teacher diplomas from the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto, and Licentiate L.T.C.L. from Trinity College of Music, London, England. She studied organ, violin, guitar, and post graduate theory, and taught these subjects.
Recognizing the need for musical adjudicating events in the area, Gertrude founded the Midwestern Ontario Rotary Music Festival in 1982 a role she remained involved in until her passing. She also co-founded the Hanover-Walkerton branch of the Ontario Registered Music Teachers’ Association (ORMTA). She served on provincial ORMTA and festival boards and represented the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) at the Walkerton music exam center.
Gertrude believed in providing performance opportunities for her students, hosting recitals filled with both musical talent and delicious homemade treats.
Beyond her musical endeavors, Gertrude enjoyed painting landscapes and gardening. She was member of the Kinettes and actively participated in her church community. Weekends at the family camp at Chesley Lake held a special place in her heart, particularly her time spent on the houseboat Eldon built, despite her lack of swimming prowess.
Even after Eldon’s passing, Gertrude continued to explore the world, visiting all continents. Her fierce independence and determination guided her as she pursued her goals. Her presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A private funeral service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Walkerton, with Pastor Pam McNeil officiating. Interment will take place in Walkerton Cemetery.
The family warmly welcomes former students and friends to come and share memories at a celebration of life from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the Royal Canadian Legion, Walkerton.
