SMITH, John Douglas – passed away with great courage and hope at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Friday, March 15, 2024 at the age of 72 years old. A beloved son, he was predeceased by his mother Dorothy Smith (2022) and father Martin “Marty” Smith (2002). Born February 19,1952 in Hamilton, ON., John proudly shared how being adopted made him feel loved and chosen. He had a profound appreciation for relationships – one that he never took for granted. People were important to John and for more than two decades, he was an active member of People First Ontario and the Welland chapter where he served in various roles as President, Vice President, and Secretary. His work with People First involved travelling across Ontario where he supported members in local chapters to promote human rights and exercise their citizenship. In many ways, John was a teacher as he helped others to see the value of connection and friendships. A lover of Westerns, John demonstrated great resilience, tenacity, perseverance, and autonomy throughout his life. He was his ‘own man’ and found beauty in the simple things: taking photos, spending time outdoors, visiting with friends, doing crosswords, and enjoying a roasted hotdog over an open fire. John was a talented wood worker and an avid supporter of public transit – he knew the routes by heart. He was a loyal and trusted friend whose sense of humour and warm smile made people feel at home. He will be dearly missed and remembered with great affection by his friends and family. A service to celebrate John’s life will be held at the H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 1:30 p.m. John loved dogs and dogs loved John, so in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Welland Humane Society.
