Aletha Helen Crowe of Edmonton passed away on February 5, 2024, one month short of her 100th birthday. She has gone to dance once again with her spouse of 61 years, Robert “Bob”, who predeceased her in 2010.
She will be held in the hearts of her children, Carol (Jim), Dennis (Joyce), James (Carol), Gary, and Keltie (Keith); 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brother, Dale (Julie) McIlhargey; nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
As well as Bob, she was predeceased by her brothers, Cecil, Ross, Keith, and Gerald; sister, Dorothy; parents, Alphonsus and Sadie; and grandchildren, Hayley Barbutza and Tim Crowe.
Aletha was born in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, and loved to sing, dance, skate, play softball and hang out with her brothers and friends. After high school she worked at the Imperial Bank in Wetaskiwin, then transferred to Edmonton where she met Bob. They were married in 1949 and raised five children. She and Bob spent several winters as snowbirds in Arizona. They loved to cruise and travelled to many lands. One of her favourite places was Ephesus in Turkey.
Her memory for people’s names, children, relatives, birthdays, and anniversaries was legendary. She was generous with her time and her gifts, contributing to many charities as well as to her family.
Though not really a golfer, she once got a hole in one. She loved bridge, pool, black coffee, eggs benedict, tea in a China cup, raspberries and whipped cream, cinnamon buns, baking, lilacs, pansies, buying a twice weekly lottery ticket, and exercising to keep fit. The Oilers (hockey) and Jennifer Jones (curling) were high on her sports list. Hobbies included reading, knitting, and crocheting. On TV, Coronation Street, CSI, and the daily Mass were favourites. She was a longtime member of the CWL. She prayed the rosary every day and for a time volunteered at a continuing care centre.
She was elegant, gracious and a great listener. Everyone was welcomed into her home and made to feel comfortable and well fed. Her grandchildren couldn’t get enough of her fudge brownies.
She endured severe physical pain in her later years but did not complain, facing life’s difficulties with determination and strength. She believed it was important to look on the bright side of life.
When she heard a funny story, her laugh was quick and full. Her husband wrote that the sun shone in her eyes. Those eyes and her smile will be lighting up that heavenly dance floor.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Riverbend Lifestyle Options for their compassionate care. Memorial Donations may be made to the
Hope Mission or a charity of your choice.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Assumption Catholic Church, 9034 95 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB, T6C 1Z3.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
